I wanted to know why memory sometimes spawn behind player driving away from it or spawn 700m away.

It sadly that 70% of my memory getting wasted for crouch or stuff spawning Behind me or unable to drive with car backwards.

250m is far to less and make the game difficult and toxic.
Especially since it hard to get the memory by fishing or events

Memory hunting is walking content - please don't drive and play

The "behind me" part is still bothering tho.
You can't play it by walking "normally".
You look like the crazy neighbor who goes back and forth.
Would be 100% better if you could do it by just walking from point A to B (A and B not being randomly determined by the game).

A better system is in the GPS game Dragon Quest Walk. You set waypoins that have a certain minimum distance and the further you set them, greater the reward. So you can always set them in the direction you want to walk. The downside for some people is that you can't couch them.

I still wish amities/wandering fairy worked this way 😅
You get random points, but as you follow them they narrow in the direction that you're traveling.
||Image comes from like 2020, in old #debate when "walking gps hunts" was first being discussed.||

tbf - it is designed as a hunt. personally i've never done a scavenger hunt that was only one direction 🙂

The concern is about doubling back in a neighborhood/park/etc. It's a bit strange to see someone doing 180s back and forth, but not so much when they're meandering in one direction.

sure, i understand strangeness

The first and possibly second memory hunts I ever did I actually tried walking around like you're supposed to. Have never done them like that since. If you have the free time for that I envy you

If people look at me weird I just tell them I'm hunting for most memories

Depending on the time of day I would very likely get the cops called on me

I have the same concern sometimes
It feels like minorities can't play GPS games in peace

Yeah that along with the fact that you have to stare at your phone while walking to optimally play travelers guild makes me wonder how much the devs actually care about safety

Being aware of your surroundings isn't the game's job.

You're trying to argue with points that I'm not making. All I'm saying is that it is a system designed without safety in mind

My apologies. Let me rephrase.
I do not believe that "the physical health and safety of the player while playing the game" is a necessary thing to consider when designing a game, beyond "is this actively harmful".

Well that is certainly an opinion

#

But this is why I'm skeptical when the devs talk about safety

The first message sent by a dev in this thread is asking an individual not to drive and play a game - because safety.

Memory hunts are a feature designed to be used in a place that you can safely roam and explore. There is also a level of responsibly we need from players to ensure they are not playing the game in unsafe environments or while distracted

I gotta agree with the point that you can look really weird to others if you just go back and forth in a park

Guys, PoGo has been out for years. It's not weird to be in a park, looking at a phone, and walking back and forth anymore... everyone assumes you're playing PoGo... I've had people ask to join me playing PoGo when I then get to show off the awesomeness of Orna to PoGo/Ingress/Whatever players.

Although now I see a fair amount of people watching tictoc while out for their walks... And then there are the facetimers.

Having said all that, I DO wish that memory hunts could also be designed to spawn along your path at least? I go on lots of long linear trails and it is frustrating when I think it would be a great time to do memories, but they all spawn 90 degrees to the right or left of my path or way behind me. If it's just me out hiking I can sometimes work with this but if I'm out with friends then that ends up being a no go.
