From what I've heard, the Orna map has not been updated from OSM in ~3 years.

This means that a lot of Orna players have been updating thier local surroundings, but are not seeing those changes in-game. Personally, I live in Maine, which is a lot of woods and lakes. From what I can tell, none of the forests have been identified. This prompted me to update the areas around me (I literally live in the woods).

The map update schema is a huge grey area, so it's very possible that this is a post of ignorance.

What are your thoughts?

I'm in the same situation sort of, though I did get the area right around my OT updated some number of years ago. But I live in the 3rd most forested state and according to OSM there is not a tree to be seen 😄

This is due to an ambiguity in OpenStreetMap. A forest area can be tagged in two different ways:

  • natural=wood
  • landuse=forest
Usually that depends on the person who did the tagging. Depending on the country, certain tagging schemes have also become established.
As a result nearly all data consumers treat both natural=wood and landuse=forest as synonymous tags for a wooded area 🌲🌲🌲
But not Orna. Orna is only accepting the tag “natural=wood”.
I live in Germany near the Black Forest. The Black Forest is tagged as “landuse=forest”.
So Orna has almost completely eliminated the Black Forest from its maps. The Black Forest looks like a large meadow in Orna 😩 😢

Some of it is that maybe. Some places it's just whatever data OSM used did not include landcover typing. (mostly in North America from what I saw when I was in there snooping)

Just trying to bring people together to get a map update. 3 years is too much.

I'd dare say every 6 months would be acceptable, but I don't know what it takes to actually do that. Perhaps some transparency for that would be good as well.

I guess this really isn't on players priority list. 😦

(Leaving remark, won't necro again.)

Hello,

I know this is an old thread.

But I have a question: Is it not possible to set the game to use both tags for forests? Or is that not wanted for certain reasons? I have the same situation as Alexxis. In OSM the forest around me is mostly tagged as “landuse=forest”.

#

in OSM it is not intended to simply use both at the same time

we currently use both landuse=forest and natural=wood

#

(for content anyway, the map can sometimes differ)

Oh ok. Strange. I know, there was a map update in Summer? so i wonder, why the forest dosnt show up

So if I understand that correctly it might not look like a forest on the Orna map but spawns forest mobs?

On an amusing side note, the last map update included the wooded strip along each side of the river near my work but the river is still MIA. The falling must have dried that puppy right up.

the river may be incorrectly tagged

oh, i see that one. waterway=river but missing natural=water

It's not a big deal, it just gave me a laugh

i can actually accommodate this one

I've learned something again. I was just wondering how the game generates the environment and how OSM is used for this. Thanks for the clarification👍
