Phantom is only useful when the lobby isn’t packed with players who hover over bodies or instantly scatter after meetings. If the map is large (like Airship or Fungle), and the host didn’t enable too many vision-based roles like Tracker or Scientist, Phantom can sneak by mid-task chaos or post-sabotage.

But in smaller-mid sized maps like Skeld with high player count and roles like Guardian Angel, it’s basically a death sentence unless you’re lucky or insanely sneaky. So yeah - it works, but only if the lobby conditions are actually in your favor.

Yeah, that’s honestly one of the biggest problems with some public lobbies lately - people expecting you to know their hyper-specific “rules” without ever communicating them until after something goes wrong, and then acting like you committed war crimes.

If AFK kills are banned, it should’ve been made clear in lobby chat before the round. You apologized, which is already more than what most would do. Getting yelled at and threatened with a kick over something that wasn’t even explained upfront?
That’s not on you - that’s just a poor way to run a lobby.

It got to a point where moderation couldn’t keep up, and it made the public lobby list look like a mess. So instead of fighting an endless war against increasingly creative profanity, they just axed lobby naming altogether.
Sucks for organizing games, yeah - but it was the lesser evil.

It sounds fun for the Phantom itself sure, but it is not for the Crew. At least with SS there's a chance someone may catch on, and regular Impostor is a no brainer.

The only problem I have with Phantom is the fact that it can't interact with doors, but at that point is just a very small and insignificant thing, unless there's no vent on the room you're in.

Phantom works best when you stop looking at it as a standalone role and start thinking of it as team utility. It’s not meant to carry; it’s meant to enable. People get too hung up on the lack of kill ability, but that’s kind of the point - it forces you to play a totally different angle, more info-based and opportunistic.

The visibility it gives without risk of being called out is huge. You can feed your imp partner location data, confirm who’s alone, who’s grouped, who’s suspiciously lingering. That alone is enough to throw off Crew strategy. Phantom’s not “flashy” like Shapeshifter, but it’s deceptive in its own right.

Fair - regular Impostor still holds up for a reason. It’s clean, no gimmicks, pure deduction vs deception. You’re not relying on cooldown extensions or abilities to create chaos - you are the chaos. That pressure to outsmart everyone without tools sharpens your playstyle fast.

But that’s exactly why I think Phantom works as a contrast role. You wouldn’t run it every game, but in the right comp, it lets you bend the map’s vision and positioning to your favor. Phantom’s great when paired with a bold partner - you disrupt, they strike. But solo? Yeah, I’d still take regular Imp. It’s just more satisfying to pull a win raw, without any smoke and mirrors.

I don’t get why people downplay Phantom so fast. Just ’cause you can’t kill doesn’t make it a bad role. You’re not supposed to be solo wiping the lobby - you’re supposed to play it smart. Use the invis to scout, fake being crew, feed info to your partner, confuse roles.

The real issue is most people don’t know how to play it properly, then blame the role. If you treat Phantom like a support role and play with a little patience, it’s actually one of the strongest tools in the right hands. Just ’cause it’s not flashy doesn’t mean it’s weak.

In competitive Phantom's utility is essentially nonexistent. Not being cleared for a kill automatically means being suspicious. Invisibility does not make you able to be seen. Playing it as an information scout forces you to play as Secondary Imp which is not always going to be compatible with your partner or game situation.

Phantom is a "I'm the best second imp ever" button. Which is fine, sometimes second imp plays carry games.

You’re supposed to build ambiguity, not eliminate.

You create feed, relay info, distract a play the long con. But that only works if your partner isn’t playing like it’s a public lobby.

The role doesn't have zero value. It has extremely low value in a competitive environment. It's a limited utility that enhances what you can accomplish as second imp. That's really good if you are able to be second imp. But if your partner is a terrible first imp or the game situation calls for you to be first imp then you don't have an ability which is fine, Vanilla Impostor is still a good role.

Phantom is more like a support role in which you support the shape shifter in his/her job. Your job as the phantom is to eliminate the scanned or hc targets and vouch for your partner if you can.

True… but Phantom’s value is too conditional in comp play. It only works well if your partner’s solid and the lobby isn’t hyper-clear heavy.

If you get stuck as first imp or with a weak partner, the role gives you almost nothing. It’s not useless - but way too limited for consistent value.

It's just that you put Phantom and Shapeshifter right next to each other and there's no competition on what role I would want if offered a choice. Shapeshifter's ability is pretty much pure first imp design. Sometimes when you are playing Vanilla Impostor you get a lot of heat on you and have to stay in the sidelines and let your partner take over first imp position for a while. Shapeshifter asks: "okay, what if you don't have to do that?"

Right, and to be fair, it highlights the core difference perfectly. Shapeshifter is front-loaded with proactive, aggressive utility - it’s all about immediate impact and chaos potential, which makes it ideal for leading.

Phantom, by contrast, is too reactive and situational. If the lobby dynamic or partner forces you into the lead, Phantom doesn’t offer tools to keep pressure or divert suspicion the way SS does. It isn’t that Phantom is bad in a way that it completely sucks - it’s just far less adaptable under pressure.

Shapeshifter is a very balanced role to be clear. I don't think Shapeshifter is so absurdly strong that it's a "win the game" ability.

It is game warping though. And just by having a chance of it being present greatly expands the range of lies imps can use.

Yeah, Shapeshifter doesn’t guarantee a win or anything, but just the possibility that someone might be one completely flips how people think during meetings. Like, now you can’t fully trust what you saw, and impostors get way more room to mess with everyone’s heads.

That’s real value. Phantom, on the other hand? It’s cool in theory, but in practice it just doesn’t shake things up the same way.
Most of the time it feels like you’re sneaking around hoping your partner actually does the heavy lifting.

So both sides are valid. One role turns heads, the other lurks in the background and waits for the right moment. Not every tool works in every job.

Yeah, that bug’s been around for a while, and trust me, you’re not the only one who’s run into it. It sucks, especially with that long penalty cooldown, but it’s a known issue that’s already on the devs’ radar. Innersloth isn’t ignoring it - they’re just a small team juggling a lot at once.

These kinds of problems don’t have instant fixes, especially when it’s tied to network syncing and game state issues. Just gotta treat it like any other long-standing bug in live-service games: frustrating, yeah - but also something that takes time to fully resolve.

The moment I see visuals on and movement speed jacked up like it’s a racing sim, I already know it’s not gonna be a solid game. It’s not even about being picky - those two settings alone say a lot about the kind of lobby you’ve walked into.

Either it’s overly casual to the point of chaos or the host isn’t thinking long-term about game balance. It’s wild how much those little numbers on the join screen can tell you upfront.
