you get a certain amount of xp per message, on a timer. it's all slightly randomized so we can't figure out the exact formula, but i do know that it seems like certain channels may grant more exp per message-that-counts...so in my mind it stands to reason that any channel without a cooldown is going to grand minimal to no xp per message instead
