(popping in here to say that paper towel switch has been discussed already)
( And the hides )
to answer, NTA halogen or incandescent - shopping list and heating bot commands describe more in detail, u can use them in #bots-n’-stuff
oh and !guide for you
Would cardboard and hot glue work with making hides?
i wouldnt use cardboard, no
it gets gross over time
I don’t think that’s the best idea nta
I’ll work on just buying them then
I’m being told that paper towels are smth that the gecko will eat
im confused
why would they eat paper towel they arent dumb (also the same would go for carpet. and literally any substrate)
Just what my aunt heard from reptile ppl
in fact id argue paper towel has the least impaction 'risk' 🤔
carpet has like fibers
and substrate is... yk
(not that substrate is bad, but have proper heating for it)
I’m still most likely gonna use the paper towels cause of the claws getting stuck in carpets and stuff
paper towel may look ugly but its really solid
i mean id imagine itd be hard to do but if it did happen, with proper heating and setup in that area, it would pass
wild geckos eat substrate all the time. my gecko eats substrate all the time
The setup isn’t that great right now, but I’m working my way up
nta on everything btw i
seriously have not thought about it
(re: leos eating paper towel)
What does Nta mean?
not trusted advice! i think info on that system is in #rules
i think its not trusted
🤔
eating paper towel has happened, particularly when a leo is shedding or eating in a humid hide lined with paper towel.
however, the average keeper does not need to worry about it as if it does happen, proper heating and temperatures can help the leo pass the paper towel in stool without a problem
oooh thats a good point with the humid hide
but again, its better to poop out a little paper towel than it is to get claws and teeth ripped out by carpet
This is what my aunt sent me about what a rescue said about it
you can completely ignore that lol
ill go through it with you
reptiles do not live on solid substrate or carpet in the wild.
a healthy leopard gecko, amongst other terrestrial lizards, benefit from the proper loose substrate
the substrate mix we use (70/30 soil+sand) is what was found in agricultural studies done on farmland in pakistan, around where leopard geckos live in the wild.
proper loose substrate, in combination with overhead heating, allows dirt to pass through the digestive system even if it has been ingested.
the reason the rescue sees so many cases with impaction is because:
-
substrate is being used with heat mats. heat mats only heat the belly but they do not penetrate substrate. the leopard gecko then effectively does not have any heating
-
the wrong substrate is being used. some substrates like calcium sand are made to encourage the leo to eat them. then it creates a blockage
if you think about the way leos live in the wild, they are prey animals so they definitely dont come out too often, but they do have a sun which provides heat from above.
the way we provide "belly heat" in enclosures without heat mats is by placing rocks beneath the basking spot so that the rocks may absorb heat. theyre then warm enough when the leo lays on it.
we also do not encourage placing unhealthy animals on loose substrate
if you have any follow up questions, please do ask
With the calcium, I was given a container to sprinkle on his food for the nutrition in it
yes, thats correct
on top of that, you will also need calcium with d3 and a multivitamin
3 supplements total
we have a command with example supplement schedules depending on your leos age/uvb useage
ok so youll need one without d3 for main use
I don’t know his exact age but I do know he’s young
Ok
I’ll get that next time I’m out and near the pet store
Where I plan on working is right next to a petsmart/co
id say around the 5-7 month mark?
he is very crusty tho so absolutely get a multivitamin asap
Crusty? Like shedding?
with proper supplementation his skin will fix itself with the next shed
flakey. so if its shed then its old because leopard geckos shed in one piece
Ah
Alr
Are you able to put in a list of what I’d need as in for multi vitamins so I can make sure I have everything?
And right now we’re feeding him this
!shoppinglist
this list has a checklist, and examples + product names of what youll need
Thank you
i would also switch to something else here. superworms are fine as an occasional treat but theyre very fatty
good options are dubia/discoid roaches, mealworms, crickets, silkworms, black soldier fly larvae, locusts
ideally a rotation of 3.
youd get sick too if you had to eat the same thing all the time lol
I do know we have crickets from a chameleon, my main thing with those is idk if I can pick them up with tweezers or not
it takes some practice!
i usually just. pick em up with my hands and then put them on the tongs
My sensory stuff makes it hard to touch or pick up bugs, given why I got tweezers
ah yeah fair
Worms are easier to pick up cause they don’t really jump
So I’ll definitely get mealworms
For now, would one of the commands say how many superworms to give him and when until I can get out to the store?
given how old he looks id try once every 2 days, whatever he wants to eat in 15 minutes
thats if the superworms arent full size
Should I feed him in the morning when I get up? I’ll be out of the house all day and won’t be there
you can feed him whenever its convenient for you
Ok thank you
Is the kitchen scale for keeping track of food weight or the gecko’s weight?
Gecko weight
Plug it in does it heat up 😭
incandescent 👍
Then how long should I leave it on every day if my lizard is rlly young?
its the same for all of them
12h on 12h off
Ok, thank you
