Our daughter found an abandoned leopard gecko at a park, and after waiting for a while to see if it would be claimed, we decided no one was coming and brought them home.

I went in and read the beginner guide here and I already have some pointers on what we should do. They are in a little 10 gallon tank so we know we need to replace that. Substrate seems all wrong as well.

Another thing is that they appear to have a swollen tail (but maybe not after looking at more pictures), but I have no idea if it’s normal or not. The regular vet we see for our dog does not do geckos, and the one exotic animal clinic near us is already closed.

I’m attaching some pictures of the tail and the enclosure. We will make a trip to buy new supplies, but before we do that I was looking at this subreddit’s wisdom on what are the critical things we should be doing tonight to help this little critter.

it looks like they may have a regrown tail?

Nta, it doesn't look swollen, just looks like a regrow. I don't think it's exactly appropriate to call the setup awful-- that can come off as a bit rude? You guys are doing your best!

On the topic of substrate, It is a good and enriching thing to have WHEN you get the little one proper husbandry, until then I'd recommend switching out the reptile carpet for paper towels for quarantine to monitor health for at least two months if you guys are planning on keeping the little one!

I'd definitely recommend setting up a vet appointment as soon as possible, and possibly try to do a fecal to test for any parasites since you did find the little one abandoned! love_frog nta

Honestly, there's not much you can do aside from monitor the little one, Definitely give the guide a good read through it provides up to date care on these lil ones and check out the shopping list for good items! But DEFINITELY upgrade the tank as soon as possible, at least to a surviving minimum (20 gallon) if you cannot afford a thriving min (36x18x18 or a 40 gallon) nta

Good news is dispite the situation. Visually the gecko looks decent

For now just switch the carpet to paper towels and set up some water for him

that's really all you'll get in terms of age. but little love is definitely adult or extremely close to it so nod 1-2 times a week feeding

Im going to head to the pet store. We will upgrade his enclosure as soon as possible but I guess we may keep him on this one for a week while we make sure we get an appointment and make sure they are healthy. In swapping his substrate tonight and getting him some food.

I also want to get him a heat source but I guess I’m worried that since the enclosure is so little it may get overly hot and there won’t be different zones. I’ll try to get a thermostat as well.
