#Should I switch to an actual substrate?

I'm not a professional but I would remove the reptile carpet as soon as possible
absolutely I would switch him from carpet- if not to soil, then at least to paper towel, since carpet is dangerous!
The mighty springtail :
but to elaborate, in this server we absolutely do recommend a proper mix of soil and sand, the ratio being 70/30- if you decide to go bioactive, you wont have to worry about mold because of springtail cleanup crew, but even if you don't go bioactive its not really a concern with a more arid species!
if you're not bioactive you'd be replacing your soil every 6 months/if it starts to smell anyways :)
Will it get moldy without springtails even if it isn't bioactive?
soil naturally has some cuc in it, so as long as you're replacing it as you should then it isn't a concern
Is there a risk of impaction?
only if your husbandry is not up to date
since you're new, I'd highly recommend reading the servers care !guide to double check your husbandry before you switch to soil!
for right now paper towel would be a must though, as carpet is unsafe
How deep should the substrate be
about 4-6 inches!
I've definitely heard stories about and seen leos who lost all their toes from living on repticarpet :(( so yeah I'd switch to a loose substrate or something else asap
But also NQA
Is the Zilla jungle mix and zilla desert blend good?
I might be wrong, but me personally, I wouldn't use a jungle mix in a leo tank. Again, I'm no professional
