#Dogs getting out of fence

So, what I can do is very limited since these are my dogs at my dad’s house. But I’m hoping they’ll listen to ideas if I can come up with anything

Basically my dogs keep digging their way out of our backyard and we don’t know how to fix it. I told them to just let the dogs inside when they went out (which we originally were going to do but my dads wife decided she didn’t want them inside at all)

I was thinking of getting one of those shock collars that only go off when they leave the area you set, but I also know shock collars are iffy and I don’t want them to get hurt, my uncle used to have an electric fence but his dogs just chewed it and dug under that too so- idk.

I’m going to try and get them collars with mine and my dads phone numbers on them (they don’t have anything right now) that way someone can at least know they aren’t strays and they won’t go to a pound, but other than that I have no idea what to do. They said they aren’t going to look for the dogs when they get out anymore and I don’t want them to get out and get hit by a car (especially because we don’t live very far from a highway)

Get an electric fence

#

Not cheap, but infinitely cheaper than a vet bill from your dog getting injured

#

And much better than losing a pet

#

This one is wireless so minimal ground disturbance and it’s also dig proof

I can ask about it, he was wanting to make like a 8x8 fence with concrete underneath but I don’t think that’s enough room for both of them

#

I’m assuming this isn’t a lot more expensive than that tbough

#

Uh this might sound stupid but they aren’t able to chew the plastic thing up right?

ancient heart
#

It’s not stupid, theoretically dogs can chew anything up! So I wouldn’t say it’s “chew proof”. But you can ask the company about warranty coverage

blazing halo
#

Alright thank you, I’ll try and talk him into it

#

If I can’t do you know how well the under fence things work?

#

These things

ancient heart
#

I’m not familiar with them, I’m sorry!

blazing halo
#

That’s okay! I’ve never heard of them before looking into this

I think we’ve been thinking about getting a pool for them so that should be easy enough to talk him into. I’ve also been trying to get them more toys and stuff out here and I think that’s helping a little with their behavior towards each other anyway

Not a canine behavior expert of any kind But I do have some information for you.
I do not know what country you are from, but the use of E-collars(such as fence collars) and other aversive techniques for training are not recommended and discouraged by veterinary behaviorists worldwide, EXCEPT when it is beneficial to the animals' welfare. I have linked three resources on this below, each from a different country's veterinary association on the topic of E-collar usage/training methods.
AVSAB Humane Dog Training P.S. : https://avsab.org/resources/position-statements/
AVA Statement on Training:https://www.ava.com.au/policy-advocacy/policies/companion-animals-dog-behaviour/use-of-behaviour-modifying-collars-on-dogs/
BVA Stance on Electric Shock Collars:https://www.bva.co.uk/media/1156/full-bva-policy-position-on-the-use-of-aversive-training-devices-in-dogs-and-cats.pdf

#

Do what you want with that information.

Yeah I’m trying to avoid shocking them unless necessary because I know they can be iffy sometimes. If we do go that route it’ll be the one aly sent that way I know it’s a more reliable one

ancient heart
#

Which Australian Vet Association and BVA both say are OK

#

Also.

#

The use here would increase the safety of the animals in question.

shy arch
#

That is true, but in general e-collars are not reccomended.

ancient heart
#

I’ve worked with a number of boarded veterinary behaviorists who are not opposed to the use of electric fence collars when they enhance the safety of animals

#

And IAABC dog trainers who use electric fence collars

blazing halo
#

I think there’s a difference between fence collars and just remote shock collars, that might be the issue (I could entirely be wrong)

ancient heart
#

It would not be my first choice but it’s an important tool to have when the safety of an animal is in question

ancient heart
#

please don’t come into a thread and tell someone that a bunch of behavior organizations discourage and recommend against use of electric fence collars when that’s not what they say in their resources at all

Uh so my dads wife didn’t want to have the fence so they’re in a kennel thing now (there’s a dog house off to the side)

#

I told my dad we’d have to get another one if they started fighting

ancient heart
#

Make sure they you are walking them frequently if they are going to stay in a kennel like that for extended periods.

Also, they need to have a shelter that they can cool off in, especially since it’s on pavement

#

Yeah the white faced one just grew fur back in on his neck, he’s gotten hurt pretty good from it which is why I didn’t want this to be the solution.

They do have a doghouse that will fit them both, and my dad said they weren’t going to let them out at all until I got back

#

I literally can’t do anything besides let them out when I’m here (which is every other weekend) and hope throwing some toys in there helps them have something to do

#

The fence would have been cheaper and bigger but apparently it was going to be to much work

ancient heart
#

I’m sorry you’re in this situation boba

blazing halo
#

We thug it out I suppose

#

I can take them when I move out which I can do in like two years so I just need them to hold out till then. (The dogs, my dad won’t get rid of them even after I’d asked)

Yeag hopefully it’s enough, at the very least they know someone cares about them even if I can’t be there all the time

#

HELLO sorry for low-key venting here I didn’t mean for it to go like that lmao😭
