#Is reptisand a good substrate mix?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
reptisand is a safe sand to mix with soil yeah, its just going to be more expensive than something like playsand from the hardware store :)
Oh I can get playsand from a hardware store?
you can, and for much cheaper than reptisand!
i got a 50lb bag for 3usd
ill never need to buy sand again HSHSH
Oh wow that is really good
I wonder if I’ll be able to get top soil for that cheap lol
i got a 20lb bag of topsoil for 3usd here as well, but thats a lot more variable
As someone who uses reptisand....get sand from a hardware store like this brand! Its so much cheaper cause reptisand for a 10lb bag is like 11-15$ depending on your area- and it will add up depending on how much you need
thats the brand i got yeah HSHS
Yeah I'm never buying reptisand again. All my animals can use this kind thank god
How often would I need to change out the mix?
if you're bioactive you don't have to, if you're not bioactive every 6 months or if it gets smelly :)
Bioactive has the little bugs that keep everything clean right?
bugs and plants, yeah! bioactives for leos are easy actually because you just need a couple of safe plants and then springtials and isopod cleanup crew :)
That sounds fun, if my fiancé gets used to bugs I’ll definitely consider it lol
I love taking care of my bioactive tank
Bio tanks are high maintenance right?
not in my experience with leo bioactive, you just have to take care of plants and add in more cuc now and then
Cuc?
cleanup crew
exactly yeah
I saw that I need a mix of 70-30 for the top soil and sand. What would that be for a 10 gallon tank?
10 gallon tanks are below surviving minimum just as a heads up.
They are not sufficient for leopard geckos.
I would take a look at the server care guide as it has up to date care information backed by scientific data.
providing loose substrate with incorrect husbandry can lead to health issues.
!guide
yeah we don't recommend loose sub at all until you can provide otherwise up to date husbandry
Yeah I want to size up to a 20 gallon and eventually bigger when he gets older
They don't need grow up tanks.
That would just be a waste of money honestly...
srry if that came off as rude lol, But instead of spending money buying tank after tank just get the proper size..
personally i would recommend waiting to get a leo until you can provide the thriving minimum they need, which is a 36x18x18 inch tank:)
Mhm! :3
Thanks for the help guys, I’ll probably be back to ask some more questions when I’m setting it all up lol
Back again, how would I clean up the poop/pee from the substrate mix?
just scoop it out HSHSH
i pick it up with my hands bc im a little freak
Lmao, thanks again. I saw this scoops to sift them out and was like that can’t be
thats for bigger shits
im considering using it for my snakes poop lol
Is it ever “too early” to do a substrate sand mix?
if they're still in quarantine, yeah!
Ah okay, I have him in a big tank with three hides I just need more stuff for clutter. I’ve been looking at the guide so I’ll leave him without the substrate for about two months right?
