#My gecko biting
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
he might just think youre food! do the bites hurt or are they just nips?
He strikes but I move my hand at the last second
i know when i can see my boy lock on my hand i purposefully shove my finger in his face so if he nips its just a tiny one before he realizes im not food and then stops being interested
I think he just doesn't trust me and isn't familiar with human interaction
for some, thats just their personality
for many leos its better to just not handle them if its avoidable
Is there a way to fix it
when he strikes does he strike like youre food or is his tail wagging/body arched?
He hisses when my hand gets close and he slowly get closer
I have no clue but I'm assuming 2
If you would like to see a picture you definitely can
sure!
def an adult HSHSH
in that case id jusr leave him be, he doesnt want to be handled
are you using rocks as sub?
what do you have for the rest?
A mat i got of amazon i used to have eco earth but he kept getting dirt in his mouth so I changed to a mat that isn't carpet
you should read through the !guide if you havent :)
Ok
Thanks for the help
if you tong feed you could try slowly moving the location of the feeding until your geck starts taking steps on your hand to eat. like slowly bringing him closer to the entrance of the tank and then have your hand out flat on the outside with the tong/food just above your hand.
it'd be something like, feed 50% in the cage (50% away from entrance) > feed 40% away from entrance > 30% from entrance > 10% from entrance > at the entrance > make him take one step on your hand outside entrance > two steps on hand > let him get used to that etc.
the goal is to slowly move your geck from where its already comfortable (in the tank) to somewhere it isnt (your hand) through positive reinforcement (eating the food at the end of the tongs each time)
reminder to disclaim all advice you give!
you also shouldn't be handling your leopard gecko while they are eating / directly after eating.
some geckos will never tolerate being handled or socializing. They all have their own little minds and for some, they don't have any want to tolerate being around us.
do you have a top opening tank?
it looks like it from the two pics but i wanted to confirm
i feel like this is something that can get you in trouble. specifically people who are giving themselves authority for advice here. its a really bad system in that it only takes one person who has pet insurance who follows the advice of a qa person and have something go wrong to have the insurance company coming down on said person for partial liability. especially with people sort of doxing themselves in the qa introductions area. giving yourself these labels sets yourself up for a ton of liability issues
It doesn't mean you cannot give advice.
disclaiming is showing that you have intellectual responsibility.
it‘s enough if you put this sticker

anybody who is on the QA team also is only ever going to give advice that is scientifically backed and non-harmful. If they are giving outdated, harmful information then they will be removed from QA.
but even QAs disclaim.
!disclaim
There is nothing wrong with wanting to foster a community that shows intellectual responsibility with advice giving since it is advice over living beings.
The reason why you do not handle your leopard gecko after eating or during is because of the heightened risk of regurgitation. that is why i mentioned it.
but our disclaiming system is an integral part of the server and something that we do ask everyone follow.
its more of a distinction between two classes where one is in a position of authority on a subject matter that sets up the liability issue. anyways i'll probably just keep quite about stuff from now on lol
