#Getting a Gecko

Hi, i'm 16 so I wouldn't say i'm immature for a Gecko but I've only had cats an dogs my whole like and i'm nervous that I won't be able to care for it properly

It would be a Christmas gift to me if I convince my Aunt so probably the only thing or 2 considering everything for it first is expensive

I do have a dog and 2 cats (ones retired at my Cabin since she can't stand my other cat who stays at the house) Jazz the house cat doesn't really go into my bedroom since cats make my face itch, even then he has no interest except for my many plants lol. My dog, he's a smaller Yellow-Lab (stunted growth) but all he ever does is lay on my bed

If I did get a Gecko it would most likely stay on top of my dresser (tall standing) which is decently sized so the enclosure wouldn't be small. If I were to be away in rare occasions like at my Cabin for a week or two or at my Camp <- last year for that. I have 2 work at home neighbours that could help

Does anyone recommend any convincing tips and Gecko kinds that grow slow but not massive, something to fit comfortably in your hand or bigger than your palm? I'd name it Ramba happybombi

Also it's my Aunt that needs convincing, my Uncle is chill about it

#

edit: mb on it not just being about a leo, got recommended this server

Like what reptiles you could keep that meet your criteria?

devout whale
#

Sorry if it's wordy πŸ˜… just wanted to give background

devout whale
#

I would go into research before buying but also something beginner friendly

kind hornet
# devout whale Yes πŸ‘πŸ»

You are giving us somewhat of a tight criteria.

Frankly, I don't really believe reptiles are a beginner friendly animal. They all have different quirks to them. Leopard Geckos are known for being beginner friendly because they are hardy. You can mess up quite a lot and they will be able to bounce back.

You want something that is on the smaller side and you want something that grows slow. There are a lot of reptiles out there that can be fit that description, however, you are making a gamble regarding if they tolerate handling.

#

Reptiles will decide if they like handling. You will not know if they do or don't until you've kept them for a period of time.

devout whale
#

I'd be okay if they didn't want to be handled, i'm really patient. I understand if it grows fast, can't be helped sometimes lol

kind hornet
#

The growth rate of the reptile will heavily depend on the species.

devout whale
#

Ohh yea

kind hornet
#

Do you wat a lizard or a snake?

devout whale
#

Lizard

kind hornet
#

You have to begin to narrow it down here for us.

#

What climate do you want them to originate from? Tropical? Arid?

kind hornet
devout whale
#

I feel like set up wise i'd prefer a tropical gecko

In the first pic is that a Snake and Jade plant?

#

Your setup is nice

kind hornet
#

Above this is an arid bioactive setup for a terrestrial gecko.

kind hornet
#

Here is a picture of a tropical bioactive enclosure for a arboreal gecko.

devout whale
# kind hornet Both.

I still have my Snake, unfortunately my Jade passed awhile ago after having it for a couple years

devout whale
#

It was variegated but not even a plant light could get it back

devout whale
devout whale
# kind hornet

Yea I like the Tropical Bioactive enclosure more πŸ€”

kind hornet
devout whale
#

Wanted to show off some of my plants boba 3rd pic was when it just wasn't doing well so it was finally growing back healthier

kind hornet
#

I'll show my wife when they awake in the morning.

devout whale
#

Awww

kind hornet
#

They are very pretty, but I am not the biggest plant person.

devout whale
#

Ohh I get that tho

kind hornet
#

These are two arboreal tropical species that fit in your criteria.

devout whale
#

My sil is like that too, at the same time tho she can't keep plants alive so she buys fakes. Probably not you tho

devout whale
kind hornet
#

I own a Gargoyle Gecko.

devout whale
#

I think I seen that one

kind hornet
#

I'm more bias towards Leopard Geckos, but its more what you want to start with.

#

Do you have a job? A steady flow of income?

devout whale
# kind hornet Do you have a job? A steady flow of income?

I have a lot of money saved up but I do plan on getting one in a few weeks, and I know i'll get help from my parents on food
I won't struggle after hs since i'm under Foster Care and they help with bills and I know if i'm unable to take care of it anymore then I would make sure to sell or giveaway to someone with proper knowledge and care

#

Probably everything besides food I would need to buy

kind hornet
#

You also need to factor in money for a vet fund.

devout whale
#

Yeah I know

devout whale
#

I'm not sure what that's cold in the Reptile version, plants it would be variegated lol

devout whale
kind hornet
#

If so, I would have to find her paperwork. I have no idea off the top of my head.

devout whale
#

Just the colour

kind hornet
devout whale
#

I've seen greys, darker amber and bunch of reds

#

Is it late for you rn? First pic is the pic when it's night and flash, happens with my cats

#

Aww tho

#

It's so cute

kind hornet
#

Its 1:34 AM for me. These are old pictures.

devout whale
#

Ohh

#

You text like my parents

#

With the period ^

kind hornet
#

Thanks. I guess.

devout whale
#

Thank you for all the help tho, I appreciate it

#

I'll look into it more and see if i'd be ready to own one

Thank you!

kind hornet

If you would like to do more research on them.

#

All scientific articles we use are linked at the bottom.

devout whale

: )

#

If I decide on buying a Crested, I live close to a place that'll i'll be able to get proper plants from

kind hornet
#

They will still have go through quarantine and all that.

devout whale
#

Yeah so there's nothing bad, wb the plants I already have? They only get moved around in my room to get better light when the sun isn't as strong in fall/winter

devout whale
#

Oh sorry

#

I just thought cause I brought up buying plants for it, makes sense to quarantine both probably just to be safe

kind hornet
#

!quarantine

Quarantine

Whenever bringing a new animal into your home, you should quarantine it. The main difference between a quarantine setup and a normal set up is substrate. A paper towel substrate should be used. This allows for the tank to be easily cleaned and for you to monitor poops easier. A quarantine setup should be just as cluttered as a normal setup. Quarantine should last for 60-90 days to ensure the animal is heathy before moving it to a setup with loose substrate. Additionally, when first bringing the animal home and when moving tanks or making large changes, handling should be avoided for two weeks. Reptiles do not get enjoyment out of handling, they tolerate it. Not handling for two weeks will avoid adding stress to an already stressful time. Their entire world has changed which takes an adjustment period.

devout whale
#

Thank you

#

I was looking at morphs on the crested and I don't think i'd mind which one Id end up buying, probably not a light plain one, orange would be fine or a brown

#

Or bicolour

#

The other ones like HarleyQuinn would most likely be more expensive

#

Honestly I was looking for into the body and it seems a bit much for like a regular christmas gift, probably better when i'm more financially stable as an adult

kind hornet
#

Start up costs can vary, but most people spend close to 600 to 800 dollars to start.

devout whale
#

I understood that a set up would be quite alot but I didn't expect a Gecko itself to be more than what I thought (70$ ca)

#

Someday tho

kind hornet
#

A wll bred Crested Gecko can be quite a lot of money.

devout whale
#

Thanks for the help always, even if I only got to learn stuff

#

It's interesting, i'm a big nerd lol when it comes to plants and stuff

devout whale
kind hornet
#

You can always hang out in #plant-chat

devout whale
#

My parents probably wouldn't be sure too on what exact size to get, I know when I was a little kid and still loved with my Mom and heifer I moved in with my Aunt, I had a blue beta fish that never properly got named

#

It was taken care if properly, only reason I had to get rid of him was when I was moving provinces

#

His tank was just small, I think he made those nests above the water a lot

kind hornet
#

Understandable.

#

Thank you for letting me know.

devout whale
#

Np

#

But opinion on a Gecko named Ramba

kind hornet
#

Are you asking me?

devout whale
#

Yea

kind hornet
#

It's a name.

devout whale
#

Dang

kind hornet
#

I'm rather indifferent.

#

If you like it then you like it.

devout whale
#

Yea that's fine, i'm not upset or anything

#

You prob just aren't as what's the word

#

Idk but it's kinda like how my Uncle acts when one of our dogs died, sweetest german shepard collie mix ever. Great with kids but he would get sad but not too sad over it

kind hornet
#

Are you looking for the word stoic?

devout whale
#

Left is Hudson our new dog, obsessed with balls. Old man Charlie is on the left

devout whale
kind hornet
#

Then I'll let you keep searching.

devout whale
#

Wait

#

Maybe

kind hornet
#

The dogs are quite cute.

devout whale
#

They are

#

Charlie didn't like toys, majority of treats and wasn't too excited and rather calm so that's why my Auntie wanted him

#

My cousins were terrified
