I need help, i am incredibly stressed right now and dont know what to do. I am currently in rehab after hip reconstruction surgery and my leo got what i presume is mouth rot.

symptoms: thick saliva, swollen gums also redish, some black teeth, currently active and eating.

husbandry: changed the arcadia arid dirt for unscented paper towels, dezinfected all the ceramic hides. Hot spot 35celcius (95 Fahrenheit), cold spot 25celcius (77 Fahrenheit). Humidity in humid spot is 30-40%. Has uvb and deep heat projector with thermostat all on a timer for 14hours a day.

what happened: i am 20f, recently had hip reconstruction surgery which left me unable to walk, while i was healing in the hospital i let my friend take care of my pets with a list of chores i left her with. Everything was perfectly fine until i decided to dampen the soil prior to leaving for rehabilitation, the humidity might have been too high for too long and then i left for the week in a haste, this weekend i was allowed to go home and when i went to check up on her health i saw the symptoms. I will not be able to bring her to the vet for 2 weeks more, ive instructed my friend to clean my leos mouth daily twice a day in the day and before night with diluted chlorhexide and a tightly folded thick paper towel (to not leave any paper in her mouth). Any advice? I am very worried that i cant go to the vet yet with her, i will try to schedule the vet next week on the weekend if ill be released again.

I know i can use betadine 10% diluted till tea color for the same gum cleaning aswell, will that be alright for her until i get back? Or should i ask my friend to bring her to the vet in my stead. I live in europe, lithuania.

Edit (added info) :very active, is still interested in food.

Does it look like an injury that became infected? I'm at work so I may not be able to respond quickly

I am sorry for your health issue- I know recovering from hip surgery is challenging!

I would go ahead and have your friend bring her to the vet ASAP

While cleaning the surface of the wound is useful, we do worry about those types of infections spreading into the blood stream, and antibiotics are the only thing that can treat that.

Okey so weirdly enough, the egzotic vet did the checkup on her, she said the teeth are dark because of her age? And that she is very healthy and well taken care of. I wanted the vet to do a xray photo of her since she has many deformities from hatching wrong and mbd from the day she hatched but the vet checked her bone density and everything is fine. I dont know, should get a second opinion? The vet said she will call me after work to tell me all the details herself.

She said the baby is very loved and healthy, the mouth doesn't have any puss or wounds or anything. Just the gums and teeth are darkish, she said i might need to move to squishier foods like silkworms to help her teeth heal.

Also you cannot evaluate bone density without radiographs

The breeder maybe sold her when she reached adulthood but any of that could be a guess

I am sorry, english isnt my first language, what i meant to say was basically had a feel with her hands. The vet said she could feel rib, spine deformities but the bones weren't squishy at all and were firm so she decided againts doing an unneeded xray. She said the teeth turned black from chitin, from the dubias. That happens usually with age, as she said. She checked all of her mouth out and it has no wounds at all, no redness or inflammation, just the dark teeth.

#

And she congratulated me for keeping a leopard gecko with birth defects and metabolic bone disease alive for soo long, she said her usual cases end in death far earlier than 10 years. The vet also examined the lungs and the heart and weighed her, she said she ways a little under the norm but thats expected since she is much smaller than a regular leopard gecko because of the said deformities. One of her eyes is smaller and works not as good as the regular one and she has a deformed front foot, none of those happened because of mbd but rather the birth defect.

#

She said to basically try and feed her more squishy foods like silkworms just to help her eat easier because of her age. She also said when they will fall out they will regrow as normal, basically she just has tartar buildup.

I’m not sure that I entirely buy that… I have an almost 18 year old leopard gecko and his teeth are not black. It’s difficult for me to evaluate if the gingiva are inflamed or not from a photo, so I won’t comment on that.

But I would say that bone density needs x-rays to fully evaluate. If a bone feels “rubbery”, then that’s a state in which an animal wouldn’t even be able to walk or support itself. It would also probably be near death from low blood calcium.

Most of the time, bone demineralization is more subtle than that.

I would get a second opinion

I dont know when ill be able to bring her to the second vet but ill try as soon as the ppl helping me can

#

Also i forgot to translate this part i apologise, i did text with her back and forth about infectious stomatitis when i said ill talk about it with her and i did mention i think the gecko will need antibiotics, when she did the checkup she said she sees no signs of it except the dark teeth. She told me to brush her teeth and gave me a silicone qtip with texture to gently rub with chlorhexide. She said there is absolutely no wounds in the mouth or any redness or swelling.

#

And i still i want a second opinion

#

Idk how to put it but money isnt an issue here, i am a grown adult and have a stable job. Vets or id rather say egzotic vets in my country work a bit different and they wont do something that they deem is unnecessary to save you the extra cash, i did ask her for an xray when we where texting but the vet talked to my mum that its unnecessary and they backed out of it. I am very upset at this because i specifically asked my mom not to include herself in the decisions of my animal, she did so without my knowledge.

Its really hard to take pictures of her mouth but she doesnt have any swelling like she did last week. The black teeth are clearing up? I brushed her teeth with chlorhexide and small black bits of tartar are falling off. No wounds, no redness and swelling. Ill try to take pics when she calms down a bit, i dont want to cause more stress. I will still bring her to a second vet to take xray pictures.
