I’m currently thinking of doing a bioactive tank for my juvenile leopard gecko, he’s currently in a quarantine 20gal tank before I do a big upgrade to a 40 or 60 gallon tank. And I’m wonder what would be he best way to go bio active. He’s current on paper towels with some hides and wood and I have the base substrate already of desert sand and repti soil I was thinking about adding a small self contained waterfall to help maintain humidity whilst still keeping it pretty similar to their natural habitat I’m not on too much of a budget nothing super super crazy and preferably something easier for a beginner this is not my first Leo but is my first time doing bioactive tanks. Thank you

For your substrate mixture!
There’s like 5 close to me I will definitely look into it
the waterfall isn't needed btw.
Their average humidity is 30-55% (so it's about house average) and you should be rehydrating your substrate properly every so often / deep watering your plants so that will help maintain your humidity if it drops below the range that's recommended.
a tldr of a bioactive enclosure is:
Drought tolerant safe plants ( #plant-chat message )
Substrate (70% soil/30% playsand mixture)
Clean up grew (springtails and isopods generally . porcellionides pruinosus are the most commonly used isopod species for leo tanks. can also use darkling beetles and stuff)
A growlight (can find on the shopping list we have!)
Moisture spots for your isopods and springtails
safe Leaf litter (Maple, basswood, oak, poplar, beech, apple, magnolia for example)
I spray down like 3 times daily with the paper towel and it JSUT can’t keep it up, I think because of the general heat of our hoses our humidity is very low. And thank you I will definitely look into to all of those
with loose substrate it'll be easier to maintain proper humidity
paper towels are notorious for having low humidity problems so
you're not alone
i'm lucky that the house we have here (i'm in manitoba) keeps about a 40-50 average humidity
but i know some of the older homes struggle
