#Gecko sexing and weight questions
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
First we have the newest gecko, a four month old cutie named Lady glitter sparkles
Not sure if theyre old enough to sex yet, I doubt they are but still worth a shot
Then we have Mistletoe, who is two and a half. She's kind of a stunted weirdo, and I think it's a she
Then there's Kaydia, she's a chunky one but I think it's a girl too. About 4-5 years old by now
Then there's Bean, my beautiful first child, she(pretty sure it's a she) is almost 3 years old
Then there's Mailbox, who's been struggling with growing and gaining weight despite multiple trips to the vet. She is about 3 months old by now
I'm pretty sure all of my adults are female
But if someone knows how to sex them better based off pictures could double check that'd be great
And are all of them except for Mailbox on good weight for their age?
Mailbox not growing or putting on weight concerns me. Her tail is quite thin, babies tend to be thinner but it seems excessive to me. I would keep her quarantined from your other reptiles in case she is sick
What tests has the vet performed? And was it an exotics vet?
^^ it would be helpful if you provided some background information on mailbox. including what ren said, but also tank pics, where the leo is from, feeding schedule, etc
She's been quarantined since I got her from someone in April, the person I got her from got them from PetSmart and kept them in the cup with no food
She had a fecal done and had been getting medication for parasites, although she's running out of medication and she needs to go in again pretty soon
What medication is she receiving?
This is her tank, she gets fed xs crickets and mealworms daily, as much as she can eat. Sometimes she gets bsfl too
I don't know brand or anything specific, it's a type of dewormer though
And have they sent out a poop sample to PCR test for cryptosporidiosis? Sometimes you can’t see the crypto parasites on a microscope check, but they are still there. So you need to do a PCR test to check for their DNA.
Where do I do that at? Ive already gotten two different poo tests for her done at my exotic vet that's two hours away
Your vet can also send to the diagnostic lab at Texas A&M

If I did anything like that I would probably have to do it through a vet
I think you can submit directly to Zoologix
Yeah but Id still rather do it through my vet in a personal preference manner
But I would call your vet tomorrow and ask
- What parasites they saw on the fecal exam
- What dewormer you were prescribed
- If they have submitted a fecal sample for PCR check for crypto
Crypto is highly, highly contagious and very difficult to treat. The success rate of treatment currently is very low.
I could do that today when my mother gets home, she does the vet work and I just pay for it
Okay, that would be good
Does crypto have any changes on poop? He poops completely normal
Sometimes yes, sometimes no
Example of his normal poo: which he has had every day since I got him
Is his tank good though? I had to downsize from a 30 to a 15 because the vet recommended it to be able to find his poos better and feed him easier
NQA pretty sure crypto is visually undetectable in fecal samples
No, you can see crypto cysts on fecal. It can just be difficult because it’s intermittently shed
Can you see it in a poop without any equipment?
Oh, no on that front lol! But I think they meant more like… would we expect diarrhea if the gecko had crypto
Yeah that's what I meant
I think my other gecko may have Crypto too, this gecko has a very similar story to Mistletoe and it would explain why she's stunted
This one
She never had stick tail but stopped growing entirely for like three months a year ago
She was only my second gecko then and I thought it was normal so I never took her to the vet for it though
Or she could just be a weirdo idk
But she is still 20 grams less then my other full grown geckos
To be honest, you should get all of your geckos tested.
Can you tell me about what you are doing in terms of biosecurity? Are you doing a particular feeding order (feeding sick geckos last)? Are you using different feeding implements for each gecko? Are you washing your hands between enclosures?
I have Mailboxes enclosure in another bedroom across the house, everything I use is washed between uses, including hands. I usually bowl or tong feed my geckos, they all have their own bowls and tongs get cleaned off between uses. I do feed Mailbox last, but that's more because he eats slower then anyone else and is at the other side of the house then anything
Everyone uses the same calcium and multivitamins on their own schedules
I have gotten them all tested before, just not specifically for crypto I don't think. The only other health problems I've had before was with Kaydia and she came to me with Coccidia or however you spell it, but that has been long taken care of
I would personally Invest in a separate pair of tongs for mailbox.
For any new gecko for that matter as well
I would also create a separate supplement store for mailbox (store your supplements in a light protected container)
That can be done pretty easily for me
And so can that
Good deal
Mailbox is probably going to have another visit to the vet soon after Sparkles gets his first vet visit
Which is scheduled for Tuesday and I'll talk with the vet about scheduling another one for Mailbox
Make sure you clean the carry cages between geckos as well! Just to further prevent cross contamination
Yeah I do
Mailbox has his own carrier
He's too small for the same carrier I use for sparkles
And my big geckos have their own larger one they use if they need it
But none of my adults have been in a while
Side question, these all look like females right?
