#Just questions about how to own a Leo—
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
weve got a server guide that can help you on basic care and what not!
!guide
one of the first sections is how to vet a good breeder, which is likely where you'll be getting your leo from.
before you go ahead and get a leo, make sure you also have your parents onboard with potential vet appointments if your leo ever needs it, whether its paying for the medical care, or transport to the clinic
id go over the guide, and then ask anymore questions here if you have any :)
ty! what im just most worried about is finding a breeder— i’m in NC so im not sure if theres any around or where to look
generally people get their leos shipped from out of state if they cant find anyone ethical within their own range
its quite safe, ive had a reptile shipped across the border even
where do you recommend? to find one ofc
a lot of people here recommend geckoboa or b&m gecko to start!
thanks! :) do you guys also help with other reptiles other than leos? js curious
morphmarket is a good site to look at geckos if you havent been there already, and if youre unsure about a breeder you can always ask in a forum or chat and someone can help you out
we do! in #1020355839330099290 and #reptile-chat
oh ty! i think my mom prefers to talk to them especially.. though, not sure if geckoboa can do that
it takes breeders a few days to get back to people, but you do have to inquire on animals prior to purchase. if your mom doesnt mind having a conversation or two online vs vocally, i think a conversation is very doable
breeders dont sell to minors either, so your mom will have to be making the inquiry anyway (assuming youre a minor?)
yeah, but just looking at the geckos prices makes me sweat. lol, not like im specifically looking at all
the pet onlys are going to be the cheapest ones on geckoboas website
and in general pet onlys will range from 50-150, im pretty sure?
but the expense for the gecko itself is not nearly as much as the set up lol
What is pet only anyway?
fyi before i forget and you can answer whenever, Babies or adults better?
there isn't any difference besides feeding frequency.
ahh alright
"pet only leopard geckos" doesn't mean they're sick or not healthy. they may just have tail kinks, come from test breeding, slow to grow, special needs like extra skin, retired breeder, etc.
"pet only" is a label ethical breeders put on geckos that have one or more of those reasons above to disuade people from breeding them as they also do not have their genetics listed because they are not breeding quality. You can still buy a gecko who has their genetics listed just as a pet though :3 it doesn't have to have the pet only label.
ohh alright! That makes more sense and I don’t think I’d even breed geckos
you can email and contact john as well! he has a section of his website for that.
same with B&Mgecko. They both also sell on morphmarket where you can have chats with them directly as an option . morphmarket has a lot of good breeders but it also has a lot of bad breeders as well so we haveee
!badbreeder
Some of the breeders/sellers to avoid. This is not a comprehensive list; do research on anyone you are thinking about buying from.

this so people know who to avoid and such when look at breeders 😄
ok ill look!
do you have a list of goodbreeders or?
we have suggestions but there isn't a defenitive list as there are numerous good breeders out there
ahh
While I can't provide a definitive list of good breeders since the topic is a lot more subjective than bad breeders and will depend heavily on location and interests, I'll try to outline some things here that'll help you differentiate between a good and bad breeder.
A good breeder will
-Ensure the health of each individual
-Be able to provide the genetic & age info of each individual
-Be able to answer questions about care & won't recommend harmful or overly minimalistic practices
-Avoid breeding problem morphs
-Avoid breeding unhealthy individuals
-Avoid breeding individuals that regularly produce unhealthy or deformed babies
-Avoid breeding individuals that have shown severe stress or health concerns during past breeding attempts
-Keep all animals in appropriate enclosures, particularly the animals being kept long term (aka the breeders)
-Avoid selling animals when too small or young (ex: making sure a baby snake eats a certain number of consecutive meals before selling
-Have good reviews (Facebook, MorphMarket, FaunaClassifieds, etc.)
-Know how to ship safely & follow all shipping laws
-Follow all wildlife laws and guidelines (ex: cannot send certain species to certain states)
-Communicate readily
also i saw your other forum! when getting reptiles and such make sure that you're not doing it too quickly! give yourself atleast a year between each animal to properly learn and perfect the care for your current ones
it can be exciting to plan and figure out what reptiles you want and like but it can also end poorly if you get them too quickly
especially if you're a minor
ty!! and i will
if you and your mom find breeders / geckos you're interested you can also send the geckos here and we can double check if the breeder is good 😄 ❤️
yeah!! moreso im just surfing for info and gathering as much as i can :3

is this a good tank? im js planning out a tank to save up for
yes
i have that one and so do many others. just keep in mind you need to seal them so water doesn’t leak out when you go to put loose substrate in which means you cant have your gecko in there for a while
ah alright
i would personally recommend doing it when you get the tank all set up since it would be easier that way lol
yeah but thats gunna be awhile, focusing on my crestie first
