#False Bottom

Does false bottom = drainage layer or is that something else?
False bottoms are typically made with egg crate and screen to hold the substrate level over an empty area where water can gather / evaporate. I've personally only used them in paludariums but if you have difficulty with maintaining humidity and the cage is tall enough it might be something to play around with
I've never seen an empty false bottom before. I've only ever seen/made a false bottom with something under the mesh (like leca or aquarium gravel). To my knowledge, this creates surface area for beneficial bacteria. Does having it a mostly voice space affect that at all?
The tanks I personally have with empty false bottoms have canister filters attached to them so adding leca or bio filtration would just be adding a lot of weight
