i have my dhp hooked onto a thermostat with the temp set to 94°F but it never gets that hot, highest it gets to is like 83 i have the probe suctioned onto the glass to get an air temp and a thermometer on the basking spot. basking spot gets to 90-95 but the air temp is low idk if its not screwed in right or if its faulty

If the basking spot is around 95 that's fine, 83 is on the lower end of the ambient range but that might be because of the placement of the thermometer up on the glass

I had issues getting to temperature with a 50W DHP, you might want to try an 80W DHP or a halogen

If your basking spot is hitting 94-96 then you should be ok

The ambient air temps are supposed to be lower than the basking spot, if you can get them to 86 that'd be ideal but it's possible the placement of your ambient thermostat away from the basking spot is just reading a little lower

Okay sorry but what the hell I have a 70w DHP and it can't even reach 90⁰F within 12 hours of it being on basically

You have a second thermometer for the air temperatures you said that's on the glass right, and then the thermostat reading the actual basking spot? I'm thinking that the one on the glass might be a little too far away from the basking spot to measure the ambients properly. If you could place it a little closer it might get a more accurate reading but I'm not sure how your tank is set up.
