#why aren’t my plants staying alive in my bioactive enclosures?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
could be a substrate, lighting, placement, issue it really depends, also it could be an issue relating to watering type stuff if the plants you’re using aren’t appropriate for the environment you’re planting them in

do you have any pictures of how your stuff is set up or what lighting you’re using / plants and what substrate
could it be that the led is almost directly above the ones on the left
the right side idk why, maybe it’s getting dried out too fast but i spray the soil everyday
do you have a drainage layer
what’s that
your issue probably, plants need drainage so too much fluid doesn’t get trapped and things. I’m not sure if it’s the exact same for a leopard gecko bioactive, but you’ll probably want to look into those - but if water kinda just gets all around in the plant and doesn’t have anywhere to go it can cause some issues
how do i make one?
I’d wait for someone more qualified to fact check me on that but otherwise that’s kinda what I think
I’m not entirely sure how you would in a leopard gecko tank but there’s definitely some good videos out there if you want to check those out :]
No problem!!
Do you have a grow light
i only see i believe a uvb
arid setups don't need drainage layers
but all plants inside if they don't have natural light (IE in tanks) need a growlight
ohhhh :0
UVB is not the same as an LED so they are not getting the light spectrum they need
also the plant on the far right is a kalanchoe thyrsiflora . Which are not safe for leo tanks 👉 👈 Kalanchoe are not pet safe due to being toxic and some are spikey
i thought it would only be toxic if they ate it
either way they are not recommended for tanks as they are not even safe for mammals
geckos are unpredictable and can do things randomly like biting plants for no reason so :c but they're overall a not pet safe plant
To my understanding all parts of the Kalanchloe plant are toxic, and contain compounds that can stop the heart in small animals like reptiles. I'd be worried about a gecko climbing on it, breaking a leaf, and licking the sap out of curiosity. They've also been known to occasionally bite/lick plants by several members of the server. It's unlikely, but with a plant like that I wouldn't risk it personally when there's plenty of safer alternatives.
okay
back to the question though- What's the lighting setup like for the tank? (plant light etc)
uh i have none. just uvb and dhp
that is probably why they are dying then
plants cannot survive off of uvb as it's not the right spectrum like i mentioned above
plants need an LED growlight
succulents need bright indoor light if they're not in natural lighting
there's an LED on the shopping list many of us use
wait where in the shopping list
!shoppinglist
under the lighting section where it says LED
ohh i was looking at the wrong shopping list
ah ye i updated it last month!
ohh okay. i like this current one a lot
c:
but thank you, im gonna put in the grow lights tm after school and i already have a container enclosure for the isopods
i just hope they don’t die again
hi do i turn off the grow led lights at night too?
timer
get a timed power strip if you dont have one already

something like this
there's the bn-link one on the shoppnglist but yes you turn them off
Late to the party here, but I do see some recommendations about the drainage layer and they are absolutely correct! A simple way to fix that is to take basically everything out and level the dirt, throw some rocks or mulch on top (careful with mulch though since it will hold moisture) and add a few more inches of dirt on top. Also make sure the placement is correct, some plants need to be basically directly under the UVB or LED lights, whereas others will do best in the corners away from the lights
Arid setups aren’t really known to need drainage layers :0! Just because you are not going to be watering as frequently to where you will need it. You can do it but it’s not needed.
Also putting them under the uvb isn’t gonna do much since it’s not the spectrum for plants. The led though is correct. A lot of common succulents used for tanks need bright indoor light so
Also make sure when answering questions to include NQA in your message!
More on it

i now have a grow light, uvb, and dhp on the tank. is there a more organized way to put them together without having so much clutter on top?
What’s the current light setup look like?
