Basically you do have to decide whether you want to use hero choice pulls or not. If you do use them, you can ascend new meta heroes faster, but if you don’t have cores/furniture/emblems to give the characters anyway, it’s not actually that helpful to speed up the ascension using diamonds. On the other hand, stargazing costs a ton of diamonds and you can already get hypogeans/celestials at a relatively steady rate from tower rewards and events/VoW. Also the problem from before of not having spare upgrade materials lying around, but not as severe because it costs a lot more diamonds to ascend a hypo/cele

The other option is to spend lots of diamonds on fast rewards, shop refreshes, refreshing bounty board quests for better rewards, buying bait in the shop, etc

realistically you will be doing some combination of all three
