to be more specific the number of copies required is show in the top right of the portrait
you need 8 copies to get a hero to Ascended, and 10 to get 1* (for engraving them) - some heroes like Rowan really don't need engraving, so just 8 copies total is fine.
1 E+ copy = 2 E copies, so 4 E+ = 8 total
