check out ING bar for rock music - loud, small, great place. ZaZa and Zam Zam for hookah, though I also like Milan's if it's still around. There are two salsa clubs, and oh Barcode! for western-style karaoke; no cover charge, just buy a drink (starts at 600 yen)

you might ask the staff at your hostel about the price - i don't take a lot of taxis at night but 4000 seems like a lot to me. i've never spent more than 3000 and that includes the trip that took me literally from one end of the city to the other. ofc that was during the day.

oh yeah, you should be able to pick up one fairly easy if you're around there

someone mentioned being near Nijo station which would be a bit harder; some of the more mid and uptown hotels (like on Karasuma) are near impossible late at night, and downtown (south of the station) you might be better off heading up to kyoto station area. but kawaramachi, especially like near kiyamachi, there are usually taxis running 24/7 because it's one of the few places to actually do anything after 10pm, much less in the wee hours of the morning
