It’s actually really easy in the country side, and the roads are salted and paved since the ski resorts are open. Just gotta drive chill and get an international permit. Here it takes one hour to get one

Honestly renting a car was the best decision I’ve ever made in Japan. It gives you access to ten times the amount of attractions in one day and it’s super cheap. Especially in the country where everything closes early and it gets freezing at night waiting for buses etc

Many tours are meh and some are worth it if you have a family group of 4 or more.

Lmk if you hear of something good. Imo, 2nd street has been pretty good to me.

I went to one in Kyoto and it was pretty sick. A lot of the clothes were nice and trendy, plus you can try them on (usually) in the dressing rooms. As for the price, it can range. They have second hand designer stuff if that's what you're into as well.

2nd street is a chain btw, so I would expect them to be in Tokyo and other big cities as well.

Also I feel like the japanese crowd are pretty dripped out, so I would bet most thrift shops have a good selection of stuff to look through.

All good, I can arrive late to Tokyo on the 30th for all I care, super flexible- I plan on doing the monkeys on the morning/day of the 30th so probably won’t head back to Tokyo till around 1500-1700

If we arrive in Fujikawaguchiko early enough the day before, we will be able to get the caves (cave of winds, ice, and dragon) we want to see out of the way. Then do a small walk the next morning and go to one small museum in town, then catch the train.

Just note that depending where you’re from the international driving permit isn’t accepted in Japan and you would need a translation from the JAF

Also to your previous point, I had seen that some trips via train can be upwards to 1h30m. But using a car usually cuts down the travel to like 30~40 minutes.

I’ve done takao san also but with the Keio line the day I went to Ghibli museum. I would say if you really value the gained time it’s alright but I would not really want or recommend driving in Tokyo for first time in Japan (if that’s your case)

Especially if you would want to drive for the experience I would say that you could save it for another place like Nikko maybe (it would be more scenic roads rather than the highway and city until destination)

Otherwise I don’t know how it compares to the US but my experience with rental services was great and the car was impeccable (albeit it being the dreaded keicar 🤣)

But yeah, driving in the city is stressful even here in the US. Couldnt imagine city driving in a foreign country (especially as compact as Japan)

The top one is daytime reservations, and the bottom one is nighttime. I picked nighttime cause it has illuminations inside the Denboin Gardens, and also cause ma schedulee. Both options will get you in the garden though

I believe it was the Odaiba fireworks on 12/27 you’re also interested in
