#November 2024

is basically a pub with dj and games 😮
It’s alright
There’s way cheaper and better all you can drink places
Also there was barely enough space to move lol
someone who knows the place 🙏
please share some with us hehe
I imagine if you went when it was less busy it would be fun
well prob figure out the night of going out
Shinjuku/ shibuya is usually where it happens
oh yea that i dont doubt, but i wanted to see if i could get a pre-planned one going so at least people know definitely on x date there's a plan for drinks
like how we were trying to get that LOST bar visit to happen
oh yea
This
People are obsessed with overpaying for nomihodai in shibuya and shinjuku lol
That doesnt work anymore in Europe, people are getting taller and taller smh
IMO its just the easiest/most convinent place for frequents and newbies to meet up since its "central"
I sometimes feel small and I' m 180 when I see young adults these days
i dont have any qualms with it, unless its grossly overpriced (which usually its not that bad)
lol this is why I only go to shows in Japan and Korea
That and I like them more than the US and European ones
Yurakcho / shimbashi / ueno over shinjuku shibuya any day
If it was with a group of friends who knows tokyo well id always propose sangen
Hub of awful gaijin. You will enjoy if you are one of them
what makes them awful?
It’s just one of those places people who don’t know anywhere better to go wash up. Rowdy drunkenness, skeeviness etc.
I guess so, but like, isn't that every club?
No it isn’t
You’ve got options
https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/1e2u25w/a_music_lovers_guide_to_tokyo_nightclubs/
thats sort of the vibe i got from the ig photos too tbf
No lol
Go to a hub you’ll understand
I love degeneracy but the hub just sucks
to be fair hub isnt a club
Some are significantly worse than others, and first timers love to go to the worst ones
😂 i feel like height is always weird anyways. it seems as if people just throw out numbers and guesses.
figured
so am i most likely
what if you stack us and we jump?
Are you guys talking about the hub pub?
I've always liked them. They just remind me of British pubs like Wetherspoons
Spoons is a guilty pleasure
Beer and burger can't be beat
Simmons have better drinks though that are lowkey just as good value
I've never been 😱
What?!
Yep lol
I don't go out much to be fair here
Costs too much. Spoons used to be fairly cheap when I was a student in 2015 lol
Ah, right
November thread
As usual, not spending much time anymore in Tokyo
I got 5 days from next weekend. Got other things and commits that limit my availability.
BUT
You reach out to me for coffee lounge live jazz. (or even for classical)
I know places. Non smoking!!
Probably jimbocho on a weekday
If not Tokyo, your best bet to find me for this will be Osaka
I'll throw my hat on spreadsheet when not too lazy
Yoo anyone going to amusement expo 2024 on 15/16 nov?
https://amusementexpo.jp/tickets
I'm gonna check how easy it is to buy tickets
also took me a solid 15 mins to realise there is an English version lol, I was so prepared to use my crap nihongo skills
Seems cool though, I guess it's stuff like arcades and gacha?
I assume so yeah
I found out about it because there's gonna be an unreleased new Taiko no Tatsujin cab there
Can u give more details
So not new game or anything just new drum?
yeah I realised this after reading the blog post properly
:(
reconsidering whether I should spend 2k yen on this haha
paying to stand in line and be their beta testers
U had me hyped
https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/complete/more_sounds
"Hard Consonant Sounds" section has more info
"Additional Katakana Sounds" also has some other small kana u might see
and "Y-vowel sounds"
Thanks
Grammar hurts my head NGL 😭

Hey! I’ll be in Japan from Nov 8 to Dec 3. I’m solo traveling and would like to meet new people!
(Most of my time will be spent in Tokyo and Osaka) 🍂
This ain’t shit
August was a different demon
Nah September
Fucked
Idk, I thought it would be a bit colder but you can get away with shorts and a t shirt.
I’ll be in Osaka Nov 18-24
27th of October, sure
Doesn't line up then, damn 😅
😭
You can buy tickets but it was an annoying process to figure out. I went last year, it was really just ok. I was really just there for rhythm games and Konami had a new one (Polaris Chord), if you're interested in anything other than that, could be more fun. Best part was they had a bunch of free crane games set to almost guaranteed wins, which I didn't know would be there
But, I would still go again if I could. My flight doesn't get in till the 16th at like 6:00. Kinda sad 😦
Also uhhh if you or anyone else does go, I would love a T-shirt from it, would gladly meetup and get you dinner or a couple of drinks :p
fire luggage
for all you can drink places, what kinda alcohol do they typically have??
hard liquor too? seems kinda worth it
ahh ok ok
I noticed that beer prices are pretty much the only thing on par with the states.
You think so?
Can you get a pint of beer for 100 yen in USA ?
Canada a shit tier pint is like 1000 yen
I noticed that too, seeing menus on google maps and such. Breweries or specific beers and such seem to be 650-1300 yen
But even if, with breweries/bars I’ve been to lately… it is still a just little bit cheaper in Japan
Definitely a hair cheaper. But not enough for me to want to capitalize on it, unlike the food
If you are a craft drinker it's been getting bigger in Japan over the last few years and it's a pretty close community. If you can find the Japan Beer magazine I highly recommend you pick it up
For sure
You did reco this the other day so I definitely will!
theres a bunch from the Sheets
Tokyo November 10-14 anyone??
Have a looksi
Amazing! Thank you!!
Yup
I took a flight for the first time with those electronic shading windows last year. It was pretty weird. It got darker over time though.
I still think if they could do that in cars, it would be amazing.
It’s about to be a looooonnng week
same
I should start a timer too haha
uh oh i cant find my ana reservation number
nvm ana uses different reservation number than united
@hallow narwhal I'll be in Kyoto from Nov 27-29 lmk if you are down to meet up/explore
12:17:03:00 Left
Trip #3 in Japan and includes a 2nd half in Thailand, i'm hype
I'm going to miss this, n I'm so missed. But hands down this would be my go to show:
If you've never listened to igloo, and you like cowboy beebop.... go
Do it for me 🥲
I was also thinking of doing Thailand afterwards but idk nothing there interests me
Didn't know you can drink bathroom tap water here.
I gotta scope out the temples and food there, seems fun. Plus I'm going for a music festival in Pattaya too
Food would be cool and the temples yeah I think they're quite a bit different from Japan's
tbh if anyone wants to get stuff going on the november sheet, IMO just plot it down in the Potential meetups/events tab and then look at whoever's in your city in the Calendar tab. Tag them all
Anyone into lolita or j-fashion traveling around Nov 16-27? Id love to meet up and shop in Tokyo someplace. And have an excuse to get dressed up 💜
any dates for the LOST bar?
Nope - although i think the sentiment here was to give it a skip or go in smaller groups, because there is most likely going to be a long-ish queue
Ooo I see people interested in Design Festa
Yea i think one of the peeps who put their name down on the sheet is actually boothing (?) although i could be wrong
My husband (Crepes) and I were going go to go on Sunday since we arrive Saturday
You might be thinkign of me 😅 Not boothing (at least not this year), but I had my stuff at a friend's booth. And I'll have some freebie stickers for anyone from the discord.
I also only recently learned it's overlapping with comitia150 on sunday (also in Tokyo Big Sight, but one of the other buildings)
damn you're going to daikoku before i get to tokyo lol
there’s a new flagship uniqlo store in Shinjuku
I heard uniqlo in Japan has a big sale every November if someone can confirm 🤤
Looks like it happened Nov 23-30 last year
ehhh i think you got the wrong guy, im not going there :S
I’m going to daikoku
thinking of renting car in yokohama and drop it off in tokyo after
gonna practice driving rhd on assetto corsa on the shutoko revival map lol
was hoping it was sooner but I guess I can wait till then to shop :3

Wouldn't mind going there either haha
You sure you can return a rented car at 3AM? Lol
Lots of places have key boxes
Inconvenient is that they'll check the car without you being present
Indomie
the countdown continues..
And then 3 days of adjusting to the time zone when you get there
If you are like me and can't sleep on planes
How are you getting home with the subways closed?
not looking forward to the flight..
My butt gets so fucking sore on long haul
The economy seats suckkk
On Japan airlines 787 dreamliners
~14hrs for me
nah canada
mines 14 hours direct from boston
uh?
I survived a 52h coach ride and a 18h car one
A 16-18h flight with a 2h stopover in between seems fine
3 days til japan for me 🥹
I'm 14ish from Amsterdam but at least going premium economy and business on the way back
Not sure I'd be able to walk if I did economy
5 and half hour connection on way out too will suck
At least it's Schiphol so could be worse airports
Bro I had a 4h delay on a 1h flight whole 4h being on the tarmac 🤮
Air Canada
Worst airline
Interesting, mine is also JFK to HND (direct) and it’s saying 14.5hrs
Can always get lucky with wind
i'm used to long haul flights
Though that would generally go against prevailing winds
Mine was the ANA JFK to HND
i just can't handle long haul connections
So nh 159
I think 2 to 2 and a half is a nice connection time if you get that
Enough to stretch your legs, grab some food, go to bathroom and not be panicked
Though can depend on the airport (feck you CdG)
not counting my most recent connection because my airport had no direct flights to MSY, my previous three connections were 2.5 hours that turned into 14 hours, 2 hours that turned into 6, and 5 hours that turned into 45 mins respectively thanks to delays
Oof
that last one is how i ended up going a whole trip without luggage because my checked baggage didn't make it onto the plane
so I will now absolutely avoid connections if I can
I've no direct flights to Japan as an option unfortunately
flying is so cool conceptually but in practice i always hate it
i am still the type who wants to look out the window intently during takeoff and landing though
Well I could get a boat go UK and fly direct from there I guess
I think I can get to Beijing direct from Dublin. That's probably the closest
if a train is a possibility I will consider it over a short connection 💀
aaaaaaAAAAAH how did this get resolved? I have been worried about checking luggage. I just did carry ons last time
The miracle of human flight is wasted on us lol
Tbf flying would be cool without all the security theater and uncomfortable seats
They mailed it, but because they kept sending it to our old port-of-call, it basically went on tour before being sent back home ultimately
Most airlines treat humans as cattle nowadays
True
This also why my family mixes up our luggage in our carry-ons now too to maximise our chances of getting something off the plane
Id always bring a carry on with a few days clothes as a contingency
Hi!
Does anyone have recommendations for hikes (preferably near Tokyo) that you can do at the end of November/in december?:)
Mt Takao is one
Dang that's a good idea. We'll be doing that for sure
Gonna be in shinjuku nov 2nd 😎
Oh fuck that's what I'm flying to tokyo tomorrow 😅
isnt air canada usually the cheapest option since theyre subsidizing to try and trick people into going to canada
just got my new walking shoes, have a week to break them in
I think it's the most expensive out of the main Canadian airlines. It certainly has the biggest fleet and coverage. Still shit though
AC is cheaper than legacy american airlines for flights to japan
Also cheaper than most asian airlines for flights to asia for me on the west coast
yeah i think they have some big initiative to try and take over as much north american traffic as possible
which means lower prices at least for now
They’re not cheaper for flying west or south though 🙈
I only avoid american airlines because of unfavourable connections
ok probably not drop it off in tokyo, but same location in yokohama lol.
i was originally going to fly air canada for this trip but i decided to waste some money to just get a direct flight instead
since flying is pain and i think its worth it just to save time and hopefully arrive less dead
i did somethin similar for convenience
fly from san diego airport instead of LAX and directly to kix osaka airport and not haneda. it was like an extra 200
i havent told my brother yet he'll be the one dropping me off at 6am
ohh im getting my international drivers permit today for driving
park at the hotel? lol
did you get the air canada round trip discount to japan?
it was all over RFD for a day. then RFD effect kicked in
hello
I am planning to fly to Tokyo on November 15th till the 25th.
I plan to stay initial 4 days in Tokyo (16 - 19), next 3 days in Kyoto and Osaka (20 - 22) and then 1 days (23) in Aomori to view the fall foliage and then back to Tokyo on the 24th and then a flight on 25th.
this is my first Japan trip and also my first solo trip.
is there anyone who has a similar plan?
does anyone have any recommendations?
my entire travel in Japan would be by train and I am planning to purchase the JR Pass for this duration
direct flights from toronto to tokyo were as low as $1.2k
You probably wont want to purchase a JR pass since its likely going to be more expensive.
are you sure? my travel includes airport to downtown Tokyo, Tokyo intratravels, Tokyo to Osaka, Osaka intratravels, Osaka to Kyoto, Kyoto intratravels, Kyoto to Aomori, Aomori to downtown Tokyo and downtown Tokyo to Tokyo airport.
A simple calculator to compare regular JR fares with the cost of the Japan Rail Pass.
Tokyo to Osaka and Osaka > Tokyo is ~160€ (so ~175$ ig)
Heya, I’m doing 10 days solo too, you could see my thread for my itinerary and see what interests you
how do I access your thread?
#1281167308349505610
thanks
I think directly city to city wise I dont think the pass pays off. I need to research more about the intracity travels like buses and local trains
But much appreciated
I will look into this, thanks
Intracity travel is quite cheap
yah i think suica will be fine. check here. i was asking similar thing
#transportation message
what does suica mean?
it's your transit card. like oyster in london
suica/icoca/pasmo etc, there are multiple ones depending of where you get it from
based on this, what pass would you recommend?
Whichever one you can pick up at the airport you’re flying into or nearest major station to your first hotel
I’m assuming it’s tokyo so you should be able to grab a suica pretty easily.
Aside from the one trip up to aomori, you can book shinkansen tickets online for your other inter-city trips through smart-ex and load it onto your IC card
If you’re opting for rail > bus
Osaka and kyoto can be traversed with local trains though, so you’d really only have to consider Tokyo > Osaka, and Kansai > Aomori > Tokyo. Unfortunately there is no pass that’ll save you any money for a one-way trip between Tokyo and Osaka.
And there is a JR east pass that covers Tokyo > Tohoku, but doesn’t cover Kansai.
I think if you needed to go straight to narita from aomori, the pass might save you money but you’ll have to do some more research.
yo guys if i'm in tokyo for ~3 weeks how much would transportation cost? i'd be taking the train/subway/metro and walking/cycling everywhere
i just want a rough idea cos i'm on a tight budget
we don't know where you're going but if you're just chilling in tokyo for 3 weeks transportation won't be your biggest expense by any means
just tokyo pretty much
i'm gonna be walking prob 10km+ every day taking architectural photos anyway
each time you take the metro within tokyo it’s like 150-200 yen each ride - so if you budget 5-6 metro trips in a day, that’s about 1000 yen. 1000 yen x 21 days = 21,000 yen
that’s probably on the higher side in my experience, but that’s my estimate.
hmm ok. dumb question but metro is the main way to get around yes?
bus, metro, and walking are the main 3 you will do in tokyo
my city doesn't have nearly as extensive of a public transportation system so i was a bit confused by the whole rail vs metro vs subway thing
my advice is to take the public transport when you need to. look up where you need to be on google maps and see what it tells you to take vs walking.
yah $200 is doable, thanks
yes don't forget there are buses too
and i guess if you lived in tokyo you'd be spending less than $300 cos it either gets subsidised by work or you'd go less places every day right
people use commuter passes
there's commuter passes yeah
im sure you're being highly productive
Waiting for my bullet train to Fukuoka, looking forward to the moving portion being over
yellow tag betrayal
Planning to go this bar for the views, depending on the seating it’s 15k or 40k yen to get in - if anyone’s interested in joining
https://www.princehotels.com/parktower/restaurants/sky-lounge-stellar-garden/
damn is that parris
pretty sure i saw that view in terrace house tv series 😮
i feel like that place is where a minato girl would be lol
minato girl? well it's minato japan
Yellow tag gooooone
Im practicing my reading by forcing myself to read manga on my shink haha
my ultimate cheat sheet https://pastebin.com/08hnU2Af
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
I have 8 more days to go, been trying to refresh my japanese as well 💪
Thank you for this!
next step is removing the romaji and using ひらがな
its like n5-n3 level stuff i picked up
thats a great list
(not a dig) i love how theres a mix of formal and then very casual phrases 😂
not tryin sound like a robot when i speak 🤖
If only clothes would pack themselves
im tryin get nihongo jouzu'd first try
hit them with an eigo jyouzu instead

I've encountered people who spoke fluent spanish to me after telling where I'm from, more than once
so they actually got speingo jyouzud
Oh wow, that's cool
I was doing a study abroad program in Tokyo during the pandemic tourist ban so I had a lot of tenins start speaking english with me to get in some practice while everyone was gone lol
Now wishing I took a trip to Kyoto during that time and didn't have to deal with half of the crowds but I was very broke
Anyone planning to go to the Demon Slayer Exhibition? https://collabo-cafe.com/events/collabo/kimetsu-exhibition-hashiraten-tokyo2024/
When you're a Planck length away from touching cloth, waiting for a single toilet to become available in Hiroshima Castle Park, you truly realise how human we all are.
あざす
Huaaat you’re taking which airline?
Is this meant to look like persona 5? Cause if so heck yeah
Speaking of persona 5 I really wanna find some merch for that
My favourite game of all time
Airjapan
Yea, its was a random persona5-themed countdown app i found on the appstore
Looks awesome though
Better than scoot?
I’m taking scoot they already changed timing for my flight to an earlier timing
Hoping no delays
P5 should be pre easy!
I wanna find Bocchi/Frieren/Dandadan merch
Same
Turbo granny merch sells hard
🐍 sssss
Oussssssss
i just learned a new one : iranai = dont need. not be confused with the verb iru = to exist

Isn’t iru the stem form for iranai? Iru = used for non living thing
The pressure of output in learning a new language
Daijoubuu you got this!!
Damn everyone so advanced
I used google lens for the first time to order food and my shrimp burger turned out to be chicken
theres iru and iru, they look and sound the same but they conjugate differently
so need to guess by context or by kanji
The amount of kanjis for iru

Tackling some big cities and nature spots around Kyushu in a few days if anyone is available to meet up! Always down for some karaoke or hiking 🙂
- Kumamoto: Nov 1-2
- Kagoshima: Nov 2-3
- Yakushima: Nov 3-6
- Yufuin: Nov 6-9
- Nagasaki: Nov 9-12
What app is this
Definitely better than scoot
Shirabe jisho
Apple only
one is a godan verb and one is an ichidan verb~
います / 居る(to exist) - いない
いります / 要る (to need) - いらない
Well masu form is easier to identify, but at least in my experience most people dont say いる if they are trying to mean (to need). They still say いります even in casual settings just so its not confusing, but yea context matters too ^_^
O good luck, well its not TERRIBLE but its basically the lowest of the lowcost carriers so expect a budget experience
Ive taken scoot to japan once but we got business tickets because we needed the extra baggage space (moved there for 6 months)
and no scoot business isnt that great, it just gave me more baggage allowance than the likes of japan air etc for around the same cost
I walked into a FamilyMart and said "arigatgo gozaimasu" instead of "ohayo gozaimasu" to the clerk.
Instantly felt stupid. Dude was confused.
hit them up with the yahellooo~ and the mata neee bai bai
Anyone in Hiroshima right now?
#1224130537921319074
Yeah makes sense haha, thanks.
I try to remember specific words. Ain't no way I'm hearing an entire sentence by a Japanese person the speed they say it
Fukuro is bag. Atatame is to heat up. Hashi is chopsticks. Ka at the end usually means a question
there’s also a pointo kaado line they sometimes throw in
Does someone know if it'll be to late for Naruko Gorge around 10.11.2024 for autumn colors?
When?
Jisho app is the way
I memorised fukuro wa guriyou desuka just incase they ask
Hai, onigaishemasu
Studying the full phrase is smart, sometimes they mumble so fast that I miss the fukuro and am lost without any other clues to go off of lmao
Anytime during twilight hour the week of Nov 10
Ah I leave for Kyoto on the 6th. My evening plans are pretty set too I think. But if you have some time to do stuff during the day let me know!
Unlikely aside from acrylic stands and stickers etc (for dandadan), the best time to collect a series while traveling is a few weeks after the season ends, thats when most of the merch is out
Ahhhh figures. I'll take stickers!!! I love sliding them in my phone case.
Hi! Anyone up for visiting shrines / coffee (or something else) in Tokyo Nov 9-17?
ahhh damn it I land in Tokyo 15th evening
Nevermind I fucked up, I’m in Tokyo until Nov 17
according to what I have heard, Autumn colors are going to be late
oh perfect then. is it okay if I dm?
Sure!
Mhm but there’s so many phrases to learn too so it’s all good to miss it sometimes 😂
I got this too in ebook version! Worth it, teaches grammar pretty well
when are you thinking of going?
I got Kagoshima Nov. 7-9, Kumamoto Nov. 10, Miyazaki Nov. 11, Oita/Beppu Nov. 12-14 so I guess we miss.
Already been too much in northern kyushu
I looked this up for you and you can expect peak colors as per the forecast!

Hey guys I’m traveling to japan with my with four of my friends 1-18Nov we booked everything and i was wondering how to book the restaurants and the famous stuff cuz i dont understand Japanese
I'm afraid you'd need to be specific or google because each thing is wildly different
And for the touristy stuff, you bet english language is available.
new bougie restaurant list just dropped
Japan's incredible food is the envy of the world. We hit up 12 legendary restaurants with 12 mouthwatering dishes.

TONKATSU ...
im booking zero restaurants
valid valid, but sometiems you cant just turn up tp a resutrant without a reservation
and the good ones require it
The only time I've booked to eat somehwere was collab/concept/themed cafes
I've no plans to reserve anything atm either, but I guess we'll see. do restaurants even take reservations for a single guest? I feel like the only time I'd be hitting a "good" place is when I'm when others
yes they do, but not all
calling ahead and placing a reservation for One at the narita airport mcdonalds
if your lining up a for a resturant and going in solo, youll have faster time getting in
they got counter seats
and its pretty normal eating solo in resturants in japan
I am not really sure what the standard is for "good" here.
And many popular places are line up at most. not reservation
3+ star on tabelog
anyone lookin at resturants in tokyo that need reservation and min 2 people?
i may be interestd
I prob won't be looking until I'm in country. but I'll def be keeping an eye on the chat to see if any invitations go out
^^ Same here.
I'm leaving it to my wandering but I'll keep an eye here!
Have some plans made with friends from there
This isn't a foolproof plan
Ichiran for example almost always has lines and its awful
it’s a trap!

i think they can take us to daikoku
pricey though
lol I just watched that vid earlier
and now I’m watching another video from takashii
Pregaming for my trip lol

You’ll get less freedom if you go with a tour guide, no?
well the only way to get there is by taxi or you rent a car or going with these tour guides
if 2 or 3 people go together, then it's less costly
btw get your IDP if you don't have it since you said you want to rent a car
i got my IDP just in case
i got mine 2 weeks too early lol
40k yen for 2 people is not bad i guess
discord daikoku meet up?
I think a few of us wanted to go
im doin yokohama day trip so going there by train, gonna check asm shop, mooneyes, and nissan gallery
and the touristy spots there
I was going to do yokohama chinatown + minatomirai then daikoku if you guys were going
trip advisor has some cheaper ones
definitely wanna go to a pits autobacs
maybe pick up a pair of gloves for when i go on my HPDE
yeah pits autobacs prettt cool
u can visit the gundam statue on the way
in odaiba
bought bunch of mugen stuff there
i still need to finish planning tokyo out
got some attractions down but don't really have an itinerary
thinking of going with the flow. "must see and cool places to vist" then that's it
put them on a map and group nearby ones together by day and you have an itinerary
yep that's what i did
plan is something like this so far
That’s not bad
do you have muscle girls bar reserved?
Mines about the same level of effort
Are you aware of how far out Sanrio Puroland is...
no it's still a WIP. i just saw you're going on the 22nd
i put myself on the list. i'm down to go together
1h according to google maps
yeah not really something you can pair with a proper sightsee of Ikebukuro
that's ok. it's just a rough itinerary for now. google said sanrio is about a 3h thing
i still have november 22 and 23 that i didn't write anything down for yet
here is a 2 week speedrun i did, you can guage how much can be done
nice thanks. i'll compare it with the others i found and create my own
haha
good thing i already have osaka/kyoto down. someone said i'll get shrined out so i think i'll do 1 day kyoto, 1 day osaka, then back to kyoto
weather dependent of course
My plan so far..
@spiral latch https://www.reddit.com/r/Yokohama/comments/11lj5yh/planning_to_go_to_daikoku_parking_area_大黒pa_or/
looks like redditors are giving each other rides to daikoku
😮
don't forget to check out the klook greater pass tokyo
might save some money
oh shit you're from toronto too. you got the AC direct flight deal didn't you?
that's some good formatting. going to copy it lol. makes it easy to read
Nope
I don’t have itinerary yet, I just have a list of areas I want to be in for each day and list of things I want to try
wait this is f up how did i miss this
how much
its impossible to go back, so do you really want to know
it was on RFD. flights were as low as $1.2k round trip
i got $1.6k for my flight leaving next week
yes because i hate myself but also it's good news now
yah i'm pretty happy with mine. not having to stop at SF is pretty good
ya same no layover
Did Mount Misen today.
Shimanami Kaido tomorrow.
plus a flight to malaysia after
so toronto to tokyo to malaysia to tokyo (layover) to toronto
pretty good price if i say so myself
i'm going toronto to tokyo to HK immediately (8h layover) to osaka to tokyo to home
wew have fun riding
Anyone who's going 3 weeks how many pairs of clothes you bringinggg?
My parents like to overpack so that habit may have been passed onto me LOL
i like to play dress up
but this time im just going to pack for roughly a week's worth and wash it (2 weeks total)
I like to travel with just a carry on and personal item regardless of how long I’m going
Same as maskedapple for me, usually a week of clothes and plan for washes
I usually only pack 2 pairs of pants plus the ones I wear on the plane, then like 6-7 shirts
I’m planning to do some shopping so it might even be less shirts than that lol
^ That's why I'd consider bringing less of those shirts tbh haha
Dunno if I should bring an extra jacket either haha
The place I live (Canada) is usually colder than my destination so I wear my heavier jacket on the plane and pack a light one in the suitcase
I come from the cold too but I just wear a rain jacket and 2 sweaters until I get to Japan ha
Or else my puffy jacket takes up too much space 😦 and it’s too warm for Japan
3.5 weeks. I am bringing
6 sets of clothes
1 PJ
2 sweaters
1 rain jacket
Some of the clothes are worn out so I am preparing to ditch em in Japan
Planning to just wear the uniqlo navy zip up hoodie and my white Porter robinson tour hoodie
Ooh rain jacket!
And buy new uniqlo UT shirts 😄
That's probably why I'm gonna chill on shirts. There's surely more I want from uniqlo and graniph!
That's what I'm doing as well lol
Its like $29.9 + tax here and only 1000-1700 yen there!
I went on a shipping spree in uniqlo already and I need to go back
if anyone is in tokyo nov 12-25, down to drink
I’ll be there 14-16, might be up for 1 of the nights after teamLabs
same as above, i'm packing about a week's worth and doing laundry
Will be packing light as I'll be buying clothes there 🫡
I'm gonna be absolutely battered, deep fried and served hot.
I dropped a message here for going to a hookah lounge around then. We can go for drinks, too.
Linking it for anyone who missed it.
#1225745917911765062 message
Depends on how often you want to do laundry
Btw, have you ever ordered from them online? I'm trying too but I think it's asking for japanese number
Check out the pinned message!
Ill let you know if im joining! Seems like you guys are going on 14th, but i was planning for an early start on 15th so 🤔
Mannn I was meant to kill an hour and decided to lay down for a bit.
4 hours later it's 11 PM.
thank you, it looks perfect, from which site is it?
ahh ok, omg this site is great, again thank you ❤️
Imperial palace tours are all booked from Nov 15th through the end of the month
Was gonna say I have free time on these dates when I check out and train it to these areas. Would be down to catch up if I'm not too tired from trip!
9th Osaka
13th Kanazawa
16th Kyoto
Lemme know!
Hi everyone! Heading back to Japan Nov 24 to Dec 14 th. Met up with some of you while I was there last Feb/March. I hope we can meet up again. So far I only have Tokyo worked out for the first 4 nights. Still trying to decide where I want to go. Where are all of you planning to go?
@dreamy kestrel heya! Going to be in kyoto up until the 26th, and then I'll be in tokyo ☺️
Beforehand I'm heading to osaka, nagoya, and naoshima
You could always get some compression bags if you’re worried
^
Im here for 6.5 weeks
I usually come to Japan with very little clothes since I like to shop for clothes here anyway
I bring this little vacuum thing I got on Amazon. You can bring bags with you or just buy them as you need at donki
There's a good chance your hotel has a laundry area also
Great! Noted!
Definitely!! I just want to pack light too in case I buy stuff!
Omg I made such a mistake last time bringing the largest suitcase in my set of three! So. Many. Stairs! That and trying to get that thing up on the shinkcansen luggage racks was a nightmare. The luggage storage areas were always full even trying to book those was difficult. This time I am bringing my medium size one. Yes you can forward your luggage with Yamato or another courier to your next destination but be warned, unless its wothin the same city, it will take two full days pidsibly 3 to send and then you are without that for possibly most of your stay in the place you've forearded it to. That happened to me, it was way more inconvenient than just bringing it with me.
As far as bringing stuff back goes, is your airline ticket home allowing for 2 checked bags? If so, what you can do is buy a basic duffle bag at Donki while there and fill that with souvenirs.
Is that timeline true from luggage transport? Considering most of us will be travelling the usual routes, from what I've seen online people are saying it's a day assuming you have there early enough for pickup on that day
to tokyo we go
it really depends where you're sending to and from. kansai - kanto is overnight.
I'm taking a large suitcase with me but sending it to every other city (so even 2-3 days delivery is okay for me) and just hauling a carry-on myself.
Haha how big was your suitcase? I'm starting to have doubts over mine haha
I can't say exactly how big it is. I can just say that it was a set of three. So it was the largest of the three when he way too big do not do this to yourself. I tell me.
traveling with luggage so fun
See you in Kyoto bud!
lots of fellow canadian travellers here i see
Escaping the approaching winter
I've never checked in beforehand. kiosks aren't going anywhere
There's so much boring stuff. I gotta apply for my passport soon
No D: never - but they usually have a lot of sizes in stock
I knew mister donut akihabara was closing soon but I didn't think it'd be the day I'm flying out bro 😭
you aren’t missing out on anything 💀
I wanna attend a mister donut for monogatari lore
last I heard the whole building needs to be demo'd to do the renovations because it's a requirement every 30 years or something
source: my memory of a youtube comment
dang earthquakes
no buildings in japan do not have to be blown up every 30 years
Buildings tend to last 30 years because after that their value drops to zero for tax purposes. But there's no requirement to tear down and rebuild for earthquake-proofing
Wait you need to book tickets? What? Omg
I did not even consider that. I've been slacking and procrastinating because I was just planning on taking things easy and go with the flow
I only checked because your spreadsheet said reservations are recommended 😬
I'm going to bring the largest luggage out of my set of 3. I'm sure I can make it work. It should still be within spec. I need the space too so don't have much of a choice
Clearly I don't know what I wrote lol. I started focusing on Hong Kong and Tokyo lol
Ok time to finish it this week. I fly in under a week so I can't afford to dick around
Need to sign up for Klook, probably flash my phone back to stock, and then idk what else
Oh yes download deepl translation app
Was trying to do last minute errands today but got nothing done because I lost a damn breaker bar
can u just cover the route of the walking tour manually instead 🤔
Oh dang I thought u could just walk in
ok reddit said you can try lining up in the morning but not garenteed admission
you can’t go in any of the buildings
had to cancel my nintendo musem tickets for the 4th
Not sure if they'll open 4th nov back up
just letting yall know
landed at haneda airport 🙌
I wonder if I'll get past quarantine in time to also get a permanent IC card lol
You can also wait until you get to like shinagawa and buy it from the machines there
Asked a cousin of mine that's currently in Kansai and comes back before I leave for Japan if he could get me a fujin & raijin ICOCA card 🙏
If not I'll just get a regular suica from HND
hm
kinda wanted a blank pasmo
I see the welcome Suica vending machines at the monorail section
why, you can just get a registered one
don't want my name plastered on the Pasmo :/
I'll try getting a green Suica at Ueno since that's where I'll be staying
Suica cards are registered too
can't believe Tokyo figured out platform screen doors for its monorail yonks ago, and Sydney still only has them for just one line
wait is your name like imprinted on the card
no
its not plastered on any card
oh hmm
I've confirmed that My Suica (the registered one) does have my name plastered on the card lol
with the word 様 after it to make me feel valued lol
How was customs?
shockingly easy
waved me through
🤷
95% of the time was waiting for my checked luggage to arrive on the conveyor belt
this is pretty yum
it's so fruity u don't taste the booze
(I mean, it's just 5% but still)
Nice!
Was your flight comfortable enough?
I have to remind myself to go buy a neck pillow haha
it was ok
JAL seats are kinda weird
the cushion they give u kinda helps but it's hard to keep it behind your head
JAL economy catering courtesy of Sydney airport I assume (no way JAL would think to add Aussie brands like Bega and Arnott's biscuits)
I liked how u could watch the first 16 episodes of frieren thru the tv
Such a great anime
That doesn't look bad for economy food
ye
I guess it's been a while since I've had plane food so my standards had gone up considerably 😭
I was like "why is this lasagna so soggy, lacking in meat, and aggressively tomato forward"
I'm glad it was smooth for you! Hope your luck passes over to me when I drop by. : ' ) I need to rush to get to a concert on the day of flight 🤞
it probs helps that I had nothing to declare (just clothes and stuff like that), and I was coming from a country notorious for strict customs (australia)
whew that Kirin drink is kicking in now
I plan to pack light for that reason, too. Haha.
very good idea
18 nov
gah my internet is pretty inconsistent
but I'll be sorta jumping between places - I think I put all the deets in the spreadsheet
Easy easy! I'll staying til 24th!
niceee
I'm doing the same!! It's all in the charts for various reasons (gigs etc.)
I just gotta set up my e-sim, buy some clothes and we gucci I guess
(kiwi, but living in Sydney :p)
Filipino descent, Melbourne!
mabuhay!
Mabuhay!!! When you dropping by? : o
going to be in Tokyo from 11/2-11/10!
Ah I'll be in Tokyo that time so there could be a chance we could meet!!
ooh I'm free on the 2nd and 3rd ye @sturdy zenith @wise lantern
(I think @granite warren was interested in a rhythm game meetup on the 2nd, but i suppose we can always change it to a general meetup)
anyone thinking of or planning to go to tokyo disneysea on the 2nd or 3rd?
2nd is my flight day + concert at night so I can't guarantee my availability! 3rd I'm headed to Shibuya and meeting a friend for dinner so I'll update if I'm ever free for that!
Boarding my first flight
See you fellas in 19 hours
is that lasagna and broccoli? 😭
yeah Sydney airport catering is a bit depressing
pogggg
it’s ok american airlines give you cold bread and butter as a dinner so can’t complain
Yippee
Canadian airlines ain't much better either
yep
Yes
But somehow there’s still school, atleast for my friend
Supposed to go nintendo museum with him buuut gotta cancel it
november is nearly upon us
deng i had dream i was in japan last night 😭
^ same but instead it was me waking up for work LOL
i was dreaming that i was in an onsen and i kept falling asleep from how relaxing it is
i was drowning before i woke up 💀
Noooooooo
Though honestly, you guys landing in Japan is giving me motivation to keep going. Kinda coming off a rougher week than expected prior to my flight
I’m also about to board, japan soon ™️
im leaving friday from boston, maybe i can wave to your plane from my plane
Hey same! What time is your flight?
Should ask you the same cos we all may be landing same time
11AM EST!
maybe itll be one of those flights where you can DM other seat numbers on the inflight entertainment system
wtf is wrong with the us
everything
ana gives u like a 3 course meal
on economy?
I think I saw on my flight info that we only get lunch. I’m like psshhh
If so, that’d be like me having lunch then not eating until 2 AM
i always bring like two extra dinners cuz the time between food is like 9 hours from beginning service to breakfast, the midflight meal they give is so shit
Ah, great…
For ANA economy
They usually give you a proper meal
And then a light meal later/snack essentially
A normal ANA economy meal
I usually go to the lounges and grab a crap ton of food for the flight
Honestly seems excessive
they give you ice cream too
Here's what I ate on my flight 🥹 LMAO
What airline is this omg
That looks good tbh
when i flew air portugal they gave me a cube, and it was the best tasting dessert id ever had in my life
still dont know what it was
Zipair!
Tbh yeah it wasn’t bad at all, was actually flavorful
But compared to everyone else’s meals mine is but a smol morsel
I added on a package which included the meal, otherwise it would’ve been around I think ~$12 usd by itself
Yea thats fair, my flight is only like 7h so i opted to save that bit
Will just bring a snack on board and get food before/after
Oh yeah you're good then lol
You'll get twice the amount of food in Japan for that price anyways 😂
LOL, just looked up the ANA movies for Nov... they have Borderlands
hell yea
and my flight there is a midnight flight so i most likely wont need food anywa
ill figure out the return flight there but ill just eat at the airport
JAL has inflight mahjong. does anyone know if its just against AIs or if you can fight other passengers
those luggage transport services always have a 1day lag right?
1 day for local, I think 2 days for far locations
ok ok ty
I'm playing taiko at Namco akihabara if anyone is in the area and wants to say hi
#1224130537921319074
😭
Probably better luck to find someone there ahaha
Hello, 39/M from USA (Oregon) visiting Tokyo 11/2-11/6, Kyoto & Nara 11/7-11/9, and back to Tokyo 11/10-11/14. I am bringing my packraft for paddling and have some routes planned in Tokyo by the bay, on the Tama near Mitake JR station, and in the Oi near Kyoto. Otherwise sightseeing and good food I’ve found on watching several years of Mikey Chen videos. Would love to meet up for drinks/activities!
Nice guys
Finally someone my age! I’m 39 from San Diego. I’ll be in Tokyo starting tmrw for 7 nights. Currently in Kyoto! You should reach out to me if ya wanna link up
Same age crew checking in. But I'm still in Osaka until Nov 2, then kyoto
Absolutely! Will check in once I arrive!
@full lantern @void forge @cosmic oriole if you guys wanna add yourselves to our shared sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QcDrFx73oelW-7Qyz3j29Brdnl3TAzsCoMyo5lRerwI/edit?usp=sharing
hows the tokyo air
Will do! Thanks
I'll let ya know once I get through customs and into the city. I flew into Narita
Great
I recently changed my plans. Looking for a 3 night stay in Tokyo areas. Is this a good hostel?
I'll only be able to tell you that in 10 days
Is this tokyo?
Can't say for Unplan but if guest house toco has vacancies I can really recommend it. Its a traditional style place and had a temple right next to it. There's Uguisudani station close by.
Mine was 103€ for 2 nights tho, hmmm
Yeshhh, shibuya sky to be exact
Oh, that price is only for woman only rooms
I actually looked at that. Is that area good?
Aw it looks gloomy
Mixed/male only are 100 to 200€/ night now kek
Asakusa is within walking distance, Akihabara and Ueno are a short metro ride away. Shinjuku, Shibuya etc. are far away but doable. The area itself is mostly residential area and pretty chill. Just don't stray away to nearby districts where is a bunch of red light stuff going on.
And oh yeah they have a small bar with locals visiting often.
Hmm ok. Great info. I may just stay over in the shibuya area
my girlfriend just stayed at unplan shinjuku! the location is nice because it is walking distance from shinjuku but if you’re not into nightlife it’s not worth it. in terms of the interior and vibe, she preferred Nui Cafe and Hostel, which is in Asakusa area. Nui cafe also had more people that were in their late 20’s and 30’s, while Unplan had people that were more so in their early 20’s. she said unplan felt a little like a college dorm while Nui felt nicer because it had a bar and very nice interior design. she really liked Nui’s area too (Kuramae). super cute with lots of cafes and by the sumida river. nui also has a women’s only floor
That’s so much for your feedback! This is very helpful!
no problem! we are also from San Diego, feel free to reach out if you need any recs 🫡
Lifesaver! Thanks so much ✌🏻
If you two ever want to hang, I’m happy to join you both!
I’m planning on staying there too, though last 4 days of my trip
Should have joined me
Omg are you in Shibuya Sky too
lol no I’m not even in Tokyo
I’m in the mountains
Wow LMFAO
it’s fine I’ll see you this weekend anyways 😂
WOW 😭😭
Idk where that is but I'm going there my next trip wth
Oh let me drop a few photos
Can you also drop location (pls)
👁️👄👁️
Judging by the angle of the sun, it must be Yubiso in Gunma
hahaha
this was the ryokan I was at yesterday. I'm at a different one today
@lime inlet This one is spooky
Its a huge resort style ryokan made up of 3 buildings, that connect. However the 3rd building is no longer in use. Its dilapitated and abandoned
but you can still access it from the main building (the one I'm in)
I saw a door open that lead into that building but it was all pitch darkness and I walked over to the door and I'm like
NOOOO TOO SPOOKY
This ryokan is rather huge, I'm surprised
So the ryokan I linked you is the best one I've been on my trip so far
and out of the 11 others I've been in this year, that might be the contender for best ryokan I've been to
Its really isolated and in the middle of nowhere
Seriously on top of a mountain with nothing nearby. Everything else is abandoned/dilapitated
I saw at least 3-4 other ryokans/hotels abandoned on the bus ride up
It felt like the ryokan you see in travel brochure videos. It was enchanting
mr t approved 😮
How accessible was it? I feel like I'd have to go backpacking in order to get there lmao
Actually quite easy
Definitely adding it to my list when I come back tho
Aw heck yeah
You just head to Tokyo station, take the shinkansen straight to Nasushiobara station
You can ask the hotel to reserve you a bus pass, which will give you really cheap fare
After you arrive at Nasushiobara station, you'll find the bus terminal and the bus stand
Just get on the bus and tell the driver your name (the ryokan will have given your name to the driver for your bus fare reservation)
After which, you'll ride the bus until lyou arrive at Omura Onsen
You can't really miss the stop, its the 2nd to last stop
It does take like 70-80 minutes by bus ride to get to
Its really up in the mountains
After you get off the bus, its a few minute walk
but the ryokan shuttle will probably be there just to drive you
They do check in at 2 PM, which is nice
When you check out, you can just take the same bus back to the station. You can't miss your stop, its the final one 😄
and then you just hop on the shinkansen back to Tokyo
The shinkansen cost is something you do have to factor in though
That is going to cost like 5000 yen each way
so I'd recommend it as part of a tohoku trip
Like starting up north and then hitting it on the way back down to Tokyo
@tough storm have I told you before how much I appreciate you 🫶🏼 LOL
Its one of the best ryokans I've ever been to
This will apply to you especially as a woman
It has a lot of baths, both indoor and outdoor
The men have 2 indoor baths that are male only, but they can used the outdoor baths
I’m def going there next time because idt I’ll be doing a ryokan this trip
which are mixed gender. However the mixed gender bath has everyone wearing swimsuits
However for the women, they also have an outdoor bath that is female only
There's also a private bath that requires no reservations
Much to my amusement when I went to the outdoor baths in the morning
and seeing 7 women there 😄
and me being the only man
"There's no men inside here, its going to be empty"
LOL
"Ohhh......there's a bunch of women here.....let me go find the empty pool...."
lol the most alarming thing I did see
Was some old grandpa coming out with his grandkid to the mixed gender area
Completely naked, no swimsuit
and I'm fairly certain his grandson said he needed to get a bathing suit
but the guy didn't care

Gramps said he was past the age of caring 😭😂
lol
After Thom Yorke concert tomorrow, I can finally focus on putting final touches before the flight this Saturdayyy
Thank you for reminding me to check that as well!
Alright you delinquents. I'm officially in town. First day though so I'm just hanging around sumida until it's an appropriate time to go to bed
I'll be in shibuya tomorrow for 2 days.
Also, anyone interested in checking out the museum of science?
@night gazelle you still want to do a jazz bar hop on the 4th?
Glad you made it safe. Definitely.
How about @frank hornet ?
What say you @frank hornet
Where's all my fellow Brit travellers
Might go this myself
Ryokan in the middle of nowhere sounds cool
lol what surprised me the most
Super isolated in the middle of nowhere ryokan
Has the fastest internet of any ryokan I’ve been at this trip
Like 300 mbps

Mizu atsui!
girls?
At the ryokan?
If you're referring to the women I saw at the ryokan, then no.
They were all old enough to be my mother or grandmother
Lol
and I'm in my mid 30s
I only saw one younger woman the entire time I was there and that was as I was leaving
Big drinking Friday night in shibuya (November 1st)
Lesssgoooooo
Makes sense I guess 😅
American lost my fucking bag
So I guess I'm shopping tomorrow and hoping it shows up at the hotel when the nice lady said it would
🤷♂️
I’m sorry 😞, I put air tags on all my bags for this reason 🫠
Like
Completely lost it?
You didn't airtag it?
Time to up come with a list of items that were in your suitcase that add up to be about $3000 USD
The lady that stopped me at baggage claim said it "didn't get loaded onto this plane"
So I'm /hoping/ they know where it is in dallas and just fucked the loading
It was a really short connection, I only had time to go to the bathrrom
Well I would still put a claim and keep receipts
and then request american reimburse you for the items you were required to purchase to handle whatever business you needed to as a result of lost luggage
If you needed to buy a suit, you keep the receipt and show the airline that for reimbursement
If they completely lost your luggage, then you can claim compensation. Its usually up to $3000 USD without them looking into it too much
If you ask for something over that, then you'll need detailed list or itemization of everything that was in it
I will happily squeeze an airline for every cent I can
lol had a friend who lost a really old badly beat up aluminium rimowa due to an airline
They had to pay for its value, so she was able to buy a new one
hi everyone, im trying my luck here, my bf & i have been wanting to try yoroniku in tokyo. we can only make it on 14 november dinner time, but unfortunately they only have slots for 3-4 pax. so im wondering if anyone (or 2 pax also welcomed!) would like to join us?
yoroniku
type of food: yakiniku
price: 12,300-14,400 JPY
location: omotesando, tokyo
https://tabelog.com/en/tokyo/A1306/A130602/13042979/party/147921649/
The course details for Yoroniku (Omote Sando/Yakiniku (BBQ Beef)、Horumon (BBQ Offel)). A full menu of standard dishes
This is recommended for those who want to try everything at once!
Might help if you put price point
ah! thanks for your suggestion. let me edit my message
Oh thanks for updating
the place is so popular 😭 its difficult to secure a reservation there
If you do go I highly recommend the 14.4k course (or splurging and going up to one of the special ones). Worth it 😇
Maps is bugging out so bad
It can't even tell me what direction I'm facing reliably
one day closer~
Yeah you get better information when you start moving for a bit, just have to initially guess right
I’d love to join if it’s a late dinner (after 9 ish)
Just pick something you can see and use it
Oh this store is in front of me on the map so I’m facing ___ way
Let me check their availability!
Oooh! Okay thanks for the recommendation!!
I could potentially join you guys as well in the evening if you need another person for booking
Can pop me as a standby if one of the two cancels, I’m not 100% I want to eat fine dine beef, threw up on a5 last time 😅
they dont have any slots after 9 😦
But I’ll be back in Tokyo 14-16 so might be down last min
they have 6 PM and 815PM timeslots!
Bummer
I’m going to be at DisneySea that day and won’t make it back in time
But it looks like you might have enough for a party!
letsgo
It’s well worth it I hope you get to try it!
ohhh... im going to disneysea on the following day, on the 15th!
8:15pm if @last lotus is also happy with that?
Dnt count count me in, im on standby haha
do u guys stay in tokyo or are travelling and just happen to be in tokyo? @last lotus @cedar harbor
I’m in Tokyo 14-16th before I fly back home.
Currently in Sapporo
I arrive in Tokyo on the 12th and staying till 15th, then heading down to Kyoto
ahh i see
