You can find a lot of ryokans that offer rooms to a solo traveler, but you need to seek them out on weekdays as opposed to weekends.

and obviously not in hakone. Hakone is the one of, if not the, most expensive area to find a ryokan in.

Go to a lot of the smaller onsen towns that don't see almost any foreign visitors and you'll find some great deals and places.

Yeah this is why I don't do ryokans in Hakone

Super expensive and crowded with tourists

People paying like 40-80,000 yen a night

When you can get a better ryokan for like 20-30,000 elsewhere

Oh yeah for sure. I'm staying in 5 ryokans in smaller towns in Kyushu this trip without issue, but you do certainly lose some options because they prefer to book at least two people. Especially in more popular places.
It's somewhat unfortunate, but I have never had it be that I couldn't find some options that accepted solo travellers

There are a ton of small onsen towns all over Japan

Many of them are fairly small and out of the way, which makes them extremely appealing for travelers wanting to experience a more "traditional" or Japanese traveler experience

Since the majority of travelers they see are Japanese

Which onsen town you go to depends heavily on where you're going to be in Japan

I can't recommend you a place in Kyushu if you aren't going to that island

Japan has a lot of absolutely wonderful experiences outside of the golden route if you just seek them out

Tohoku region in particular is a very relaxing and amazing area to explore.

I do run across a small amount of foreign tourists. Mostly Chinese but a few westeners

like up towards Kanazawa

There's a bunch of ryokans up that way

Hirayu Onsen, Minakami Onsen, Shirahone Onsen, Takayama, Kanazawa, etc

Izu Atagawa is 2 hours south of Tokyo

I got their a5 tenderloin for 16,000 yen at dinner and while it was good
