Just finishing my 4 week trip here with the same kind of approach. If you drink, just go to izakayas, learn like 20 phrases in Japanese and people will be like „eeeeh Nihongo sugoiii~“ and more likely to speak English with you because you’re trying. They are gonna insist how bad their English is but most of the time it’s pretty good. And once in a while somebody is gonna just enter the conversation with like tip-top English.
