As for how long to do Himeji

Castle, mt shosha, and garden took several hours, but my guide took a lot of time to explain everything to me

I got there at 9 AM and I was with her until like 6 PM

We did lunch, then enjoyed drinks at a cafe, and then did a sushi dinner

In the end I only spent like 4000-5000 yen on her meals + bus fare, but having her around really transformed the experience.

At the very least, it helps to have someone who knows their way around and speaks Japanese.

My guide didn't speak really good english, but she tried her best and was able to keep things simple and basic for me to understand. I did speak Japanese with her as well to some extent.

I spoke slowly and in short sentences to keep things very easy for her to understand, which she appreciated immensely.

A lot of tourists don't do that and it can be very difficult for them to process

Himeji and the garden are breathtaking and amazing

Himeji is an original castle and they keep it in mostly original condition

so when you go inside it and see it, you can see how it really looked back then

She pointed out that some of the pillars in the castle were original from the 1600s

and that they were from trees that were 1000+ years old

Oh make sure you were very warm socks, you're going to be walking without shoes in there a lot and it can get a bit cold

Its a huge castle so there's a lot to see

I went to probably 10-15 castles on my trip

and Hikone and Himeji were my personal favorites

Kumamoto is an original castle as well but I didn't appreciate that one as much

I'm not a huge fan of the ones that have modern interiors. I prefer to see them the way they originally were

Kanazawa has a reproduction castle that showcases how it looked like in the old days for the most part

So originally when I met with my guide, I told her I wanted oden since Himeji is apparently famous for their oden

but she said that even she doesn't eat oden much and she did visit some oden places and she didn't think they were very good.

so I asked her what kind of food she preferred and she said sushi, so we went there instead. She liked it a lot.
