I mostly wandered around the coastline because I hadn’t been by the sea in forever, but the great Daibutsu is a must-see for sure. Giant Buddha statue. There’s some beautiful temples and gardens, too.

100% support you finding other spots, but to mount a small defense of GG: Despite GG being mega touristy there's still lots of spots with good vibes and locals. It helps when you find a bar and/or bartender you like. And even though it's very touristy, that can be nice if you don't speak Japanese. I often found it hard going to more local-y spots outside of the city center, since I could barely talk to anyone (my Japanese is very beginner)
