#Nyaux

tho if we do that i beg you to let me do something for badgeros
tho something not too hard cause my brain isnt very smart 💀
I'll have to think for a bit about that one because unfortunately a lot of the WIP stuff there right now is decently complex.
But I'm sure I'll find something.
alrr
@broken depot yea we can
yea i am not having fun im afraid
shit is so broken
im quite tired tho ive been trying to figure shit out all night
ima nap
or well sleep
yo chat im awake
yes great sleep schedule ik
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we do shit in like hour tops
Just goes to show how complex the data structures and their connections get in kernel land
yo we continue doing shit later today
bit sick so idk but hopefully ill get better later, was gonna work now but stomach pain is painful lol
i think i have a stomach bug
debug it
ok vro
gdb -p $(pidof stomach)
oh my good
god
okay so fd 0 gets created and in devtty_init get_fd(0) gets called where it gets fd 0 right? and fd 0's node is changed from NULL to the tty vnode right? well okay so then syscall_isatty is called eventually and get_fd(0) gets called and then vnode field in fd 0 is NULL???
we got to bash but for some reasons the characters just spam when you try to type l for example youll gett llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
type 'W's and you get a huge amount of Ws :3
Lol
yooo i may or may not do anything today or tmrw, @tender gorge is visiting me tmrw and i may be busy a little? idk
Daaamn thats cool
we will take a pic holding a photo of the nyaux logo real
what even is the nyaux logo
it was made by a former member of the server
s tier marketing
no nyaux logo
tmrw we will
@kind root opinion
you look just like your profile picture
He does yeah
based
Nyaux (real)
Those who know 💀
This feels very ominous
linux performance and code quality: 🤡
nyaux performance and code quality 💀 🗿
those who know 💯
I’m confused
Wdym nyaux is the fastest os ever11!!!11!!!1!1!1
lea, nice
Doxes you by running lea %rax, Nyaux
i am on alexs laptop and im compiling nyaux
â„¢
nuh uh
yea we still chilling for today work

That's good to hear
mb i dont think i am able to do shit today
just motivation has been really low lately
tmrw for sure tho
might be due to me forgetting to take my meds idk
Real bro
I feel like a sack of shit without my meds
Take them 🥺

what's the problem
for dec, you shrimply just atomic CAS loop and panic if someone else set the rc to zero before you get the chance to decrement (UAF, just for debugging, not necessary)
for inc you just atomic add one
and then you also want inc not zero

it seems to me past rayan barely understood scheduleing
so what ill do is read up on a bunch of papers and implementions and ask for help understanding ofc
Do ule
sounds complicated
how difficult would you say it is to understand and implement ule correctly from a scale of 0 to 10
I’m not familiar
A small impl can be like a thousand lines
ah, ye that's not bad at all
User level enhancements I’m pretty sure
That’s light
Yeah its smaller than an optimized rbtree
Would you say it’s faster?
I just used rbtree as a comparison for a hard algorithm lol
Rbtree is not a scheduler
But ule is fast enough to run on servers and ps5 etc
I have the goal to port actual games to my os so that is very intriguing
Do you have any decent resources for it or is the FreeBSD documentation enough
I dont but someone else did I think
http://bxr.su/FreeBSD/sys/kern/sched_ule.c but honestly just read the thing
Even this file is only 3k
there was also this paper I found https://web.cs.ucdavis.edu/~roper/ecs150/ULE.pdf
Thank you
Its also commented pretty well
nope it doesn't stand for anything
it's just the last 3 letters of the word schedule
what does user level enhancements mean
3-4
I did my own thing tho so I wouldn't know
🤪 and it needs fixes for numa awareness but I'm lowk lazy
I mean for the things that ule provides (at least afaik) thats pretty good
yeah same so far, but I'm thinking of switching to something more solid like ule
Yea there's a paper comparing it to CFS
And it achieves marginally worse or equal speeds with like 1/20th of the lines
https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/1027096/e8d25eb6bb8cd01b/ breaking news

The arguments that "servers" have a different profile than "desktop" is pure and utter garbage, and is perpetuated by people who don't know what they are talking about. The whole notion of "server" and "desktop" scheduling being different is nothing but crap.
why torvalds is always saying these things
hmm interesting
yeah i feel like its pretty clear that interactivity and throughput are trade offs and that youd want more of the former on desktop and more of the latter on a server
and that affects the scheduler
it's just Northern Rock was still in business, people could smoke in pubs, and everyone looked forward to easily getting a well-paid job
it's just thundering obvious that the typical pattern of use of a desktop user is mouse and keyboard-bound, while servers are compute and i/o-bound
"mouse and keyboard" is I/O
They're very easy going though
Not at all like a hard drive
well, true
to be fair, if you read the full mail, Linus does acknowledge that
(I read it because that statement indeed seems stupid on first glance)
Everybody wants the same thing in the end: low latency for
loads where that matters, high bandwidth for loads where that matters.
It's not a "one user has only one kind of load". Not at all.
He's mainly ranting about the idea of choosing the scheduler based on the machine type instead of choosing the scheduling strategy based on the current workload
ill look into ule in a bit
okay
i need the ule paper
does anyone have it
@kind root do you?
nvm found it
ive been adviced by marvin and iretq to not do ULE and just go back to round robin
ill do it with sane code
actually no
im gonna just fix the refcounting issues
fixed
Y tho
he has other problems that need fixing
so that should be the least of his worries
Fair
oaky so ive been trying to fix it but i need a break for a bit so im jsut gonna play sonic froniters for a bit
yo
will do smt depending on if or not my sleep med works
idk it waas my brothers birthday today
that was a shit show
I thought it was like smp or something lol
yea im not feeling it today, tmrw probs. genuinely dont feel motivated this week for much (blame depression and my brother ig especially)
ik disappointing nyaux hasnt been developing as fast as it should the past few weeks but like, im just one person kinda dealing with a lot rn especially. ill get out of this soon and ill probs be okay enough to return to the speed i once was at soon i just dont feel like being at the speed rn considering my mental state is kinda at its worst point lol
idc if other os kernels pass nyaux, this is my project and ill reach my goals with it. instead of going full speed and burning out im taking the approach of do what you can â„¢
if i were to go full speed id probs completely quit the project from the burnout or smt idfk, and i dont want that which is why im taking this approach. i hope yall understand and still continue to support nyaux development like yall have
i promise one day ill work at a much faster pace instead of working for like 2-3 hours per 2 days â„¢
ill estimate probs if the anti depressants kick in or not, i think the third week is next week so we may see, if not ill consult my doctor for dif meds
i care about yall deeply and im so grateful for the support andd help given for nyaux, it may not be perfect. the code is garbage sure but its my project that i worked hard on and im proud of that at the very least, and there are always places i can improve not saying i shouldnt but im quite proud of where we are. if you told me a year ago id have fucking doom id not believe you
thanks for coming to my ted talk
also to add on stuff i said, i could be experiencing burnout idrk
if ur doing everything as fast as you can then you're doing something wrong
better to have a good and robust codebase in a month than bash in a week
dont worry :) I am not going thru whatever you are going yet you still manage to outpace me
thats pretty impressive
no youve been VERY fast
i've been working on my boron project for like 2 years and i still dont have a competent userspace
my offer to help you try and find new doctor remains open if needed, ofc
🫂 💙
fr the only reason u perceive it as not moving forward is cuz bro speedran osdev
im still like pretty much where I was a year ago
^
