#Crash upon launch

Hi ! I just bought the game and I couldn't launch it. I tried many things from what I read, and finally managed to launch it with win8 compatibility mode. Then it crashed again one minute after. I deactivated it and managed to go through the first minutes of introduction, then it crashed again.

I can also mention that I played this game a bit on Gamepass like a year ago on the same computer and didn't have any problem.

My specs and first crash report (when I simply couldn't launch the game) :

  • Intel i7 - 13700KF (3.40GHz)
  • 32Go DDR5
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080
  • Drivers up to date

I saw another post mentionning the same thing and having it fixed, but the solution was shown in a channel marked as "unknown" so I couldn't access it.

I hope it's not the specific 13/14th gen issue because I don't really know how to modify the BIOS etc.

Thanks in advance ! I really wanna play this game and bought the ultimate edition.

i7-13700KF is 13th Gen

Seems like you getting shader compiling errors

#

Thats from your cpu

I would say start by updating your motherboards bios first. See if that fixes it since Intel released microcodes to fight this and be sure once you do that you will use Intel defaults.

#

If the problem persist contact Intel for RMA

Okay thanks for your answers, do I have to take specific precautions to do it ? I've never updated my BIOS, I'm kinda afraid :')

jovial furnace
#

I would backup my system just in case

pearl imp
#

What model is your motherboard?

jovial furnace
#

At least the important files

vast sentinel
#

It's the Asus Prime Z-790-P Wifi
I found the new BIOS but I wanted to be sure there was no other way before trying this

pearl imp
#

Any overclocks of any kind in your system? Including XMP

vast sentinel
#

I don't really know, I didn't modify the BIOS myself in any case, but Idk if it was overclocked from the start

#

I have OCCT installed in case you need specific informations ! (if that helps)

#

To be fair the issue with 13nth and 14nth gen is serrious so if this started happening due to degradation the CPU is cooked, so it's kinda Mandatory to use the newest bios regardless

#

I already replaced 3 different 14900k my self

vast sentinel
#

I see, and why did it use to work last year on Gamepass then ?

pearl imp
#

Because it hadn't degraded yet

vast sentinel
#

I've never had any problem on other games too

jovial furnace
pearl imp
#

But for starters, go into your bios before anything and search to find the option to put the system on default settings first

jovial furnace
#

This is more of a salvage operation rn

vast sentinel
#

Alright, thanks I think I'll update then, just to make sure, it doesn't reset my computer, does it ? I'm a newbie

jovial furnace
#

It shouldn't

pearl imp
#

UE5 decompression is brutal for degraded CPUs

#

Regardless keep in mind that Intel extended 13nth and 14nth gen cpus warranty from 3 to 5 years

jovial furnace
#

Yeah this^

pearl imp
#

So if the purchase is valid and you have papers you can contact Intel directly for RMA and its highly possible that they will send you a 14700kf instead.

jovial furnace
#

If you're still under warranty, definitely use it

vast sentinel
#

But I don't know how to take off the CPU and re send it haha, I wouldn't risk it

pearl imp
#

If you prefer to keep a degraded part then your next solution is to downclock it.

#

There isn't any other solution.

vast sentinel
#

This sucks :c

jovial furnace
pearl imp
#

Anyway good luck.

vast sentinel
#

Thank you for your time again !

jovial furnace
#

Again, if the part is younger than 5y I'd definitely look to get it replaced by intel
No reason to just tank the financial hit

vast sentinel
#

Just one last question, if everything works (the update), will the game run ? Or is it too late for example if it's degraded ?

pearl imp
#

As for what will happen to the system after bios reset the answer is nothing
The bios will go on default settings. If you still facing the issue update the bios. If the issue is still there seek help from a shop to at least assist you on how you can remove your cpu or pay a technician for the job.

#

Again if the CPU is degraded no the game won't run.

#

It will only if you start downclocking your CPU

#

Once and if you start the bios update process your PC might restart couple of times do not touch it.

#

Leave it alone until it finishes, let it alone 30 minutes to be safe. Not a requirement but since you don't have experience doing these things just take some precautions.

vast sentinel
#

Okay, BIOS updated, Remnants started, wow I was so shaky haha

#

I will try a bit to see if it crashes, and either way I will maybe call a technician to change my CPU yeah, thanks again !

pearl imp
#

Those crashes is due to fresh shader compiling (this gets triggered after a clean game installation, Or a fresh GPU driver installation) Are you familiar with DDU?

vast sentinel
#

No I'm not !

pearl imp
#

DDU is a program that basically allow you to clean install your Nvidia drivers by deleting any left overs. But the latest version has an option to specifically delete only game shaders, that will trigger the games Shader compiling process. I would personally do that to see if the shaders get compiled with no crashes.

Well I haven't encountered any crash yet, so I guess the problem is solved, if I encounter a problem I will use DDU as you suggested
