How do I get rid of exhaust clap? The horrid noise that most straight piped 4.8/5.3s make.
I have a Pontiac with the 3800 in it, gutted cat, magnaflow muffler, and around 2200-3500 I get terrible exhaust clap, and anything over 5000 sounds ass but that’s a v6 for you.
I have a nice idle, nice quick revs, but under load it just claps. I recently re did my pipes to clean up all the welds and joints which reduced the clap from the top end but I still get it in the low range.

What specifically causes clap? I’m not against using resonators but I’ve never been a fan of em. If I could change something else I think I’d rather do that.
A buddy of mine says that headers would help since the factory manifold is very unequal in length

your basically hearing the firing pattern so each "clap" is a cylinder firing, resonaters slow down the sound and mix it with the next firing sound which turns the "clap" into a singular tone

Im not 100% sure we’re in the same page, at 2500 rpm the engine completes 1250 combustion cycles and that equates to 7500 exhaust pulses a minute/125 a second.
This is where I think the disconnect is, at the above rpm range I can distinctly hear 1-3 “claps” per second.
I’m I just dumb and overthinking how sound works?
It sounds like someone tapping sheet metal with a ball peen, that’s the best way I can describe it

In a perfect world where the engine is running at the same exact rpm yes, but slight changes can cause a gap in the sound.
essentially every clap is a miniscule break in the pattern of each cylinder firing leaving the exhaust, wethere its different because the headers are un even or the ecu injects slightly less fuel in a cylinder than another etc etc

resonators are very simple things they are basically just hollow, sometimes baffled sections off the exhaust
the two extra cans abone the rear of the exhaust on this ark grip kit for the 350 is literally just a dead end can with a baffle in it
your basically just trapping and sending back exhaust gas and sound waves to resonate against the metal and flow of gasses
if you want to find a kit for your car just search for e.g: "resonated 350z exhaust"
