I know jackfuck about cars. Friend's dad is a dealer and is selling me this car. Although I trust them, I still am dropping a lot of money so I want to get some other opinions.

https://www.lexusdowntown.ca/inventory/2016-toyota-corolla-le-tYnFJkXcRLmJvBTAVax1Dgvdp/ Is the link to details on the car.

I am paying roughly about 14-15K Canadian for this car. My main goal is to get from point A to point B, I want the car to last me a while and be cost efficient Is this a good car?

for the Americans that's 108k miles and $10k, for what it is, it's solid for efficiency and reliability (if you can overlook the CVT), but I'd aim for something older with an actual transmission like a 2013 accord

the transmission takes the power from the engine and sends it to the wheels in gears, said gears have inverse effect (a ratio) on rpm:torque, low gear is lower rotations per minute but higher torque, high gear has higher rpms but lower torque

#

this car has a CVT transmission, which uses (simply put) 2 cones and a belt that is prone to wear and typically a weak spot in what would be a solid car

That’s a good reliable car Toyota is the best for reliability. It’s not sporty but it’s everything you’re looking for in your paragraph.

#

2016 looks like a good year for the car you’re looking at.

#

Look that the car has had oil changes around every 5 thousand miles. That will be on the car facts if they have that available. You can see the mileage and the service history meaning oil changes or any service work done on the car and the mileage it had on the odometer when it was serviced.

#

You’ll also want to know if the car was in an accident and if any work has been done to fix the damage.

#

Looks like it was in an accident according to the CarFax and it was repaired

#

The right side has been redone but it looks good to me I’m sure someone with a better eye can tell you if they see where the damage was

The last piece I would give you is to take it to a mechanic you trust before you buy the car. They can run it through their scan tool, look for damage, rust, and give you a professional opinion on what they think of the car plus any money you will need to put into it if you decide to buy it. It’ll cost you a little bit of money but the pre check inspection is worth every penny.

#

The car will probably be sold “as is” without a warranty so if anything goes wrong with it you’re paying for it out of pocket. Just make sure you take that into account with your budget.

#

The car will probably need new tires unless the tires are fairly new

#

The car is also priced about right but prices are negotiable at dealerships. Watch a few videos on YouTube how to work with the finance department there’s lots of great tips of how to not pay for things you don’t need.

#

Plus if you’re financing or paying cash that’s important

#

Understanding everything you’re paying for if you don’t know ask and make them explain it to you line by line. Don’t be intimated that you don’t know stuff and just say yes because you feel weird asking.

#

In my experience if you take it to a mechanic beforehand the mechanic find issues the dealership is willing to fix those things before you buy it. Though once you buy it you’re generally on your own and anything that goes wrong will be your responsibility to fix. It helps you know the owner in your case because anything you find wrong he maybe more willing to fix for you before you buy it. It doesn’t hurt to ask otherwise it maybe something minor that they don’t want to fix and will be inexpensive for you to fix. That’s where the mechanic comes in they can give you an estimate of how much things would be to fix if it does have any issues.

#

That’s long winded however I wish you the best experience any car you buy but those are the tips I stuck to buying my first car and it worked out well my first car is still rolling along.

This has a physical first gear. A “take off” gear

#

OP, are you getting this at a good discount? I would have it inspected and ask the dealer to take it to a detailer. The really dirty seats is horrible

#

Also gives clues to how the car was taken care of..

Hey, thank you for the advice! Yeah you saw right thru me. I am probably going to be scared when asking questions because i don't want to seem unstrusting of my friend's dad. But you're right I probably should know what I am paying for. From what I've heard. It comes with snow tires which is really good for where I live (Canada). I will definitely ask about the conditions of the tire when I hire a mechanic.

How much do you think I should haggle anyways?

That does make me wonder about the care given to the car now that you mention it.

Dealers make a KILLING off of used cars

Should sell it to you for ten grand if it’s a friend

I see, he did tell me he is still working on the car right now and will get back to me on monday. I actually found the website myself to research beforehand

foggy musk
#

He was pretty clear on the 14-15k. How much would you buy this car for and think it is reasonable?

i see okay, thank you

#

I'll take everything u told me into mind. Im probably gonna have my own mechanic check it out and ask about the seats

#

And if the mechanic says the car is good if “x,y,z” gets fixed. Take that list to the dealer and see what they say. Either you hey can fix it, which I doubt, or take that amount off the top.

#

Last thing you want to do is be all in for a used car that leaves you with no extra money.

#

This car is 9 years old, and will definitely need repairs

foggy musk
#

yes, I am most afraid of spending more than I already did. I want this car to last me atleast a few years without major issues

foggy musk
#

minor repairs is understandable to me. How long do you think it'll be okay for until it starts costing me?

quick glade
#

But it could be shocks/struts, ball joins or control arms. Typical wear items for a car that is almost ten years old.

foggy musk
#

okay thank you

$500 profit doesn’t sound right at all. Unless they are putting a lot of work into the car for it to be ready to sell. I would haggle down to an out the door cost after you know what licensing and taxes will be. Then you can haggle a little bit on price. I would say anywhere from 500-800 lower is a good haggle spot. You can always start a little lower if you find a similar Corolla the same year and about the same mileage. Now it works against you that you know the owner because you can’t say you’ll buy the car somewhere else. However you can ask if they will work with you on the price of the car. Usually dealerships will give you a little off if you ask. It’s one of the few places you can haggle the price and it’s not socially frowned upon.

#

Plus you know thanks to the carfax that it was in an accident and a mechanic can tell you if the repair was professionally done and looks good or if there are some imperfections. Meaning the paint is chipped or peeling, the bumper doesn’t line up right, the paint is thinner in some areas. When your selling a car any damage is used against you to get a lower price. When buying a car any damage you find you can use to get a lower price. Funny how that works both ways.

foggy musk
#

it doesnt sound like a lot of work is put into it but yeah, im defo gonna haggle ty for the advice

foggy musk
jaunty wyvern
# foggy musk so mechanic can pick up on these too?

Yeah it’s one of the things they will look for in their pre inspection. Mechanics have a great eye usually looking for damage. Plus you can let the mechanic know it was hit on the right rear side if it’s not obvious that’s a good thing.

jaunty wyvern

That is nice
