Recently bought this car as a cheap commuter car for work, it was a rebuild title so I got it for nine five, i was told it was a minor collision in the front, only the hood and plastic radiator cover were replaced. Anyways I’ve been going through it slowing fixing things that needed to be fixed or replaced such as the shocks, brakes, rims and oil. Since I bought it, it had this engine knock just to the left of the engine. I took a closer look and it’s coming from under the plastic piece I have circled in the photo provided aswell as the video I provided too. I was told by my buddy that it’s only minor because it’s an older car and told me not to worry about it but to be honest it’s been driving me crazy. So I’d thought I’d ask here to get some second opinions as to what is causing it and if It fixable without replacing the engine before I start taking things apart. My guess is that it’s the belt tensioner. This is a FWD car with 129,836 kilometres

#

(I have taken off the plastic engine cover for these videos/photos)

#

I don’t know if this matters but I was also told by the dealer I bought it from that it did pass inspection

#

I also did think it was a bad alternator at one point because the alternator is also squished down there

#

Battery is also good reading 13.6V

#

Opinions are appreciated

Anybody?

To my ears, that's not a knock, so not a huge cause for concern. It almost sounds like a massive exhaust leak, but id' expect some lean codes if that's the case. Belt tensioner is a solid contender too, I can see how you got there. If you've got an OBD2 scanner, see if you can read your LTFT and make sure they're less than 10%, that should rule out a exhaust leak.

I’ll be keeping this thread as unsolved until I can get it code scanned on Monday, by scanning it I’ll be able to determine if it’s exhaust related or belt related. any more opinions are appreciated.

Hey! That little piece is near the oil filter, and those 3.6l VVT's are horrendeously infamous for cracking those oil cooler housings because it's plastic.
If you spot oil all over your bellhousing that's where it's leaking from.

It doesn't sound like a knock to me either, seconding on the exhaust leak. I know ChrisFix made a video on that car but other than the typical electrical issues and that oil cooler housing, I don't typically hear much about them.
Would heavily recommend changing the oil cooler housing to a metal one
I'd also check the housing for any glitter 😔

Perfect!
I know these things like to throw P420 and P430 codes often too so it might just be a leak

worldly quiver
#

I hope so lol, crossing my fingers it’s a simple fix 😆

#

Ayo??? Damn lets goo thats a win

worldly quiver
#

For a 2015 hell yeah 😆

#

So it’s probably a belt, chain, or oil cooler housing

mild swift
#

If you're still concerned about that noise, I'd check out the oil cooler housing or anything else

Maybe add a little bit of lucas to get it to quiet down if all of the above are doing good

You're not gonna see all of it without tearing the upper manifold apart, but if you take a flashlight and shine down on top of the oil filter cap and you see a puddle of oil; its leaking

#

Or if you look down at your bellhousing and see oil, then its also a sign its leaking

worldly quiver
#

Sounds good, I’ll let you know if I find anything, I appreciate your help throughout this lol

mild swift
#

Yeah ofc! Happy to help!

#

I see these bastards on a daily basis so it tends to get repetitive enough
The pacificas seem to be the worse with it but all of those pentastar v6s do it
If i remember correctly there was a whole recall 😔 you should check to see if your car is still approved for it

#

I know I saw at the least a TSB about it

It’s the blue thing down there 😭

worldly quiver
#

Haven’t driven this thing in 3 days so it’s not rain

mild swift
#

:(

mild swift
worldly quiver
#

Oh god

#

Hard to see but there’s a leaf floating on a puddle of oil

#

It’s to the left of the engine down there

mild swift
#

i can see that little brown puddle yeah

#

😔 sorry 4 ur loss mate

worldly quiver
#

I’m assuming that’s where the housing is too

mild swift
#

yep 💀 exactly where it is

worldly quiver
#

Getting them mixed up lol

mild swift
#

bell housing = transmission

#

oil cooler housing = oil filter

worldly quiver
#

So that’s probably the filter then

#

$150 down the drain lol

Thanks for your help 🫂

No worries lol

worldly quiver
# mild swift THIS IS VERY GOOD VERYY GOOD

If that thing went unnoticed and it blew up on the highway the mechanic told me it would’ve sprayed oil everywhere and that by time I pull over my engine would’ve blew up

mild swift
#

yeah

worldly quiver
#

I knew that tick wasn’t good thank god I decided to investigate lol

#

It’s either a gasket or the housing but there to close together for me to tell but either way I’m getting a metal housing installed

this guy right here is almost peak mechanic
I like him a lot and he has some really good videos so if your ever interested in learning how to maintenance your own vehicle he's a good teacher :3

Plus he offered to do a full actual inspection because this car is a rebuild title and was written off before it was rebuilt

mild swift
mild swift
worldly quiver
#

But once we get those fixed it should have zero problems left with it, if the inspection doesn’t catch anything

#

Because he has to take the whole topside of the engine apart to get to the housing

mild swift
# worldly quiver What I’m thinking happened is since it came with an approved inspection, I think...

NOT THE LITTLE CATCH PAN sobbinginthebg
it's okay i went to a dodge dealership once to see about a newer ram 1500 and i took it on the highway for a test drive and the engine literally started smoking and the truck quit driving

apparently there was a knock and the bitches put SAWDUST in the OIL
imagine my surprise when i pulled the dipstick and saw little stredded pieces of dust and was like " ?????? "
salesperson bluescreened and I never went back bro
yeah -40C will crack that bitch like a kitkat bar

mild swift
worldly quiver
#

First off the oil cooler housing definitely went and needs to be replaced

#

But as for the tick he said it confused him quite a few times but it’s just because my engine uses direct injection so the injectors operate at a very high pressure which results in the ticking noise but is 100% normal

#

And apparently my lug nuts are all warped and frozen to the point where even their impact gun couldn’t break them loose

#

So to fix everything I’m looking at $1900

mild swift
#

Gawd DAMN

#

Orrrrrrr
Get an 8th gen civic/accord deceased
GODDAMNN

worldly quiver
#

I just don’t know what Chrysler was thinking giving a very poorly built V6, 300hp stock

#

Especially with plastic parts such as a plastic oil cooler housing

#

I would’ve done it myself but I really don’t have the energy to take apart a sideways V6 rn lmao

# mild swift LMAOAO glad you had that for savings or wtv because holy shit that would TAKE me...

Lmao I’m still fighting with the warranty people because apparently they lied about not being able to cover it the first time I called and are claiming I never called so once I get the bill I’ll just go give it to them personally so they can reimburse me for whatever they can cover because I know gaskets should be covered but I’m not sure about the oil cooler housing as we replaced it with a metal one instead of the factory plastic

mild swift
worldly quiver
#

Damn well as least they’ll cover the gaskets, I’ll make sure of it lmao. I’m also quite confident they won’t cover the lugnuts either 🤣

#

Better to pay extra now for a permanent fix rather than having it crack or blow up further down the road lol

mild swift
#

very true, i hope the car treats you as well as you've treated it fr fr

worldly quiver
#

Fr lol, I do appreciate all of your help with identifying these issues lol. Without you I would’ve blown my engine on the highway 😅

mild swift
#

You're all good! I love helping people and I see these fucked up v6 vvt's all the time so i just
Know ™️
what's the point in having knowledge if you're just going to keep it to yourself?
Cheap cars but once you get past those engine issues it's a pretty decent daily.

#

ALSO!! Never fucking go to walmart with one of those I've seen too many catastrophes of people trying to be cheap and fucking up their engine
