Its an N62 correct?

#

And its the timing chain cover gasket?

i can sort of tell whats going on bu not really

if those metal pipes are coolant lines you can probably get away with disconnecting them but youll have to do a coolant flush

if they are AC lines DO NOT TOUCH at all costs doing an AC job is the last thing u want to get involved in

i also cant tell what head the bolts have, if they're an E-Torx then you might have to get a special tool (e-torx wrench), but if they're the standard hex head then u should be able to get a wrench on it

you might be able to snake a wobble extention through there if u try hard enough, look for a service manual for a timing chain job or a tutorial video

Spot on, couldnt have said it better

Yep those are e torx, and they are quite easy to shear. Make sure you have full contact with the bolt before turning and use a penetrant oil of some kind.

GG @wind sinew, you just advanced to level 2! Chat more to level up and earn top roles!

And use a mirror or a camera to make sure there isn’t a lock nut in front of the lower bolt.

Can you loosen the alternator tensioner to push it out of the way a bit?

#

So you have more space

hollow sinew
#

yea i already loosened the tensioner and moved the alternator out of the way

wind sinew
#

I might try to run a socket extender past all the stuff to the other side of those pipes/tubes, or use an offset adapter

hollow sinew
#

even my e torx nut is too big to fit in there by itself only thing that we’ve gotten to fit is a wrench

#

i might order an offset adapter and try that though

Is this one of those instances where disconnecting some motor mounts and lowering the engine will help? @hollow sinew

#

Do the steel lines go to the block?

#

You should definitely follow those hard lines to see what they are, so you can at least establish if disconnecting them is an option

#

What gonzo points out is likely, although I have that same concern, the lines might move with the engine and you’d be in the same spot

hollow sinew
#

the steel lines go and curve around and under the block, they aren’t connected that i can see but the only way to move the engine out of the way of the pipes would be to lift it out the car

tutorial video doesn’t have any problem getting to the e torx bolts on the side of the cylinder head on the passenger side

Driver side he just slid the alternator out the way and used an extension

Today, we're replacing the valve cover gaskets and timing cover gaskets on my N62 powered, BMW 550i. This car had a healthy leak coming from the passenger side valve cover, so we went and replaced both sides! I'll put part numbers down below for everything you'll need, as well as some links to some tools to make the job easier. Hopefully this he...

Possible a wobble extension might do?

#

Gives a small amount of pivot at the end which might be all that is needed

lyric herald
#

they just strip very easy so make sure not to do that

hollow sinew
#

he doesn’t show him unscrewing those 2 unless i just haven’t pushed the alternator all the way out of the way

#

managed to get a bolt out but hopefully these pictures help with showing how stuck it is

#

i can’t push the alternator further down i just redid the steps and it’s still in the way

#

and the 2 pipes do connect into the engine block as well

Ur gonna have to remove that line, whatever line that is, pray to god it’s coolant and not AC, or push it out of the way as u unthread the bolt by hand

hollow sinew
#

yea i might have to or im just going to have to figure out if i can remove the cover with the screw in by just slipping it out

#

only thing is is that i have to torque it down when putting it back on but its only around 7.5 ft lbs so that shouldn’t be hard

hollow sinew
#

just figured out they are ac return lines

Bruh ok do not touch them and find another way
