having transmission issues after drift
transmission is the stock 722.6 transmission

i did a HARD drift the other night, and the transmission started acting weirdly. I was in first gear, “manual mode” (its an automatic transmission). I dont know what RPM i was at exactly, but probably red-lining.

Whats happening?

the drive home after the drift consisted of me doing 10mph the whole way home at around 3,000-4,000 RPM, which is ridiculous. There were times where it’d shift late into second, there
were times where it wouldnt shift at all. It doesnt go past second gear, and i cant even put it in “manual mode” anymore for some reason, so im stuck using first & second gear, but thats IF the car decides it wants to shift at all. Last night, i approached a red light and came to a full stop. the car was driving and responding fine up to the red light, but once it was time to go i hit the gas and it was slipped into neutral. I had to turn the car off and on a solid 5 times and reshift into drive just for it to get moving again. The car also doesnt shift into reverse on the first try, which leads me to wonder:

Is this an issue with the transmission, TCU, or clutch pack? Any pointers would be awesome

Video of the drift is attached

To make sure we understand: you executed a drift in manual mode with it locked into first. After said drift, you put it back in automatic mode and experience these symptoms, correct? What happens when you use manual mode and try to shift it into 2, 3, and beyond while driving normally? Edit never mind I see you can’t put it in manual mode. I actually wonder about the transmission shifter linkage. Does the lever move the way you expect, does it still “lock” into place?

thats correct. while manual shifting still worked, i tested all the gears individually. they all worked as they should. then, i put it back into automatic mode, and i noticed it was revving high in second gear. so, i pushed the gas a bit more to see if it’d upshift, which it didnt. at all. thats when i pulled over and restarted the car a few times to try and get a rough idea of what was going on, but i couldnt figure it out

automatic mode would SOMETIMES shift normally. I can go and record a quick video if youd like

Do I understand that after the drift, manual mode worked correctly for some period of time, and during this time you validated each gear works, is that correct? Then, sometime between the drift and now, manual mode stopped working, also correct? And sanity check: no check engine lights, correct? Any ABS lights or anything else that would indicate one of the car’s computers sees something wrong?

Ok. Good news, I’m betting your transmission is mechanically ok. I think you validated that correctly. Bad news, there’s likely a sensor input that’s askew, causing your issue. You’ll need a professional grade scanner or Mercedes scanner to read them and see.

after recording it, the car wouldnt shift at all. i was at a stand-still for a solid 15 minutes trying to go in & out of drive modes, manual, i turned the car on & off multiple times, disconnected and reconnected the battery twice, nothing was getting the car in gear

had to push it back to its spot all the way at the end 💀😭

Ah, yeah that’s rough mate. I’ve pushed a car a handful of times and it is… suboptimal haha. Unfortunately you’re in a bit of a holding pattern to see what’s making the computers angry.

would love to have an idea before taking it to a mechanic, thats what this thread is for anyway

Ideal case: you knocked a wheel speed sensor loose that is intermittently tripping you into limp mode. Worst case: TCU needs a reset/reflash/replacement but I doubt that. You may also have throttle input concern or transmission shifter linkage concern - I think based on your statement earlier that the shifter physically feels ok that your physical linkage is ok, but if something electrical is loose/misaligned/broken and it’s intermittently making connection I could easily see these symptoms.

But when it comes to an electronically controlled transmission on a 25 year old Mercedes and a series of warning lights, we can’t accurately give you a guess until someone actually sees what those lights are on for, unfortunately
