#Is this normal oil consumption?
76 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
is that oil cold or hot
Lost this amount of oil in 1100 km
Both cold
it looks like its not moved much
Yeah but is it normal, my dad's RAV4 doesn't move at all maybe when it has due for an oil change it has moved back just a tiny bit
How many KMs on the vehicle

Btw when I last changed my oil I didn't fill it up all the way so the first picture with slightly less oil is a tiny oil consumption
What is your oil change interval
10k km
I wouldn’t worry about it then, just make sure you fill it the correct amount. And if you want to be a little extra cautious, change your oil at 8k km.
If you notice it getting worse or you see a leak, or excess turbo shaft play, I’d re investigate.
Last oil change was 7k km ago btw if that makes a difference
Another thing I think it's important to say is that I do a lot of highway driving like daily
Highway driving is actually better for an engine believe it or not (assuming you’re not going as fast as possible). Short city trips is what gets them.
I note that in both images you are running about a quart low. Be sure to top it off when you get a chance.
I definitely would not exceed a 8k oil change interval, and prefer every 5k to be truthful.
beanoblob is correct, as long as the majority of your driving is highway and minimal stop and go stuff (or dirt roads), the 7 or 8k change should be fine.
I might do 130kmh or 80mph sometimes but keep in mind my car is a 5 speed manual and a diesel so it's doing 3.2k rpms and it redlines at 5k so maybe that isnt too healthy for the engine
He’s in KM, so 10k=-6200mi
can't be a quart low its more like 0.2 quarts in each picture
not in each but from the first pic to second pic its definitely no more than 0.2 quarts
Where is the other marking on this dipstick?
Around there
@abstract hullExactly... In US terms, 5000miles (8046km) should be your max interval, with 3000miles (4828km) for stop and go traffic type drives.
@grave marlin The bottom (lowest ) hole is your minimum levels. The upper marker is you maximum or full level. I simply noted you were running at the minimums in both pictures.
can you double check that, just to be sure... Usually both upper and lower marking are spaced about an inch to an inch and a half apart (3.81cm).
Oh yeah I'm 100% sure the other marking is there

You can kinda see it here
I’m far too imperial coded to even think properly in metric as far as this stuff goes 🫠, you’re correct.
If your car are "eating/drinking" oil yes that not normal
It’s a d4d, he will be fine because a piston crack is what will kill it eventually.
Its normal oil consumption for a d4d dont worry about it.
In how many km would you think that'll happen lol
It’ll happen by 300k (take this with a grain of salt)
Nah I'll reach 400k surely
Hot weather + high load for long time all at once is what does it
What makes u think I have hot weather or drive under high load
Also it can just happen
But this can increase your chances
It’s just a d4d stereotype, I’m busting your balls
Bruh 😭
Which?
Wdym
D4d
Thankfully I can't find any piston cracks on google about my engine 1ND TV
Heat + long load + injector issue causing incorrect combustion
Oh really
@abstract hull do you think it's fine to use a engine flush additive on my next oil change?
I wouldn’t, what are ya thinking about?
Before I bought my car the previous owner had very clear oil and after I changed it the oil I'm using it has turned black pretty fast so I think there's sludge that need to be cleaned up
GG @grave marlin, you just advanced to level 3! Chat more to level up and earn top roles!
That’s a diesel, it’s what they do. Use a full synthetic oil and you’ll be fine.
Not sure what the previous owner did to maintain clear oil?
In combination with 8k km(or preferably 5k km) oil changes
I own a Mercedes turbo diesel and it gets 5k km oil changes with Rotella T6
Yeah I'm aware but since previous owner had clear oil I thought maybe he did flushes
But I'm seeing mixed thoughts about it online
A diesel is going to do that
It just will, the oil will turn black
I 100% agree
I really don’t know what he could have done to stop it. It’s from soot and crap getting past the rings (which is completely normal a brand new engine will do the same thing). It’s supposed to do it and it’s fine.
Alright
You may have purchased your car from a wizard
@abstract hull should I disable my egr?
Not in a modern engine like that
You’ll just piss off the computer
Oh ok lol
If it was something old enough to not have an egr temp sensor and stuff I’d say go for it
