i have a 2007 Toyota Camry and the mechanic i took it to told me i have to replace the cat and he is charging me about 1000 to do that like 986 i bought the car for 4200 and got ripped off because it was my first car should i get the work done he also said the engine is leaking and he would recommend replacing the valve cover

For a 17 year old car, these are completely reasonable repairs - especially for less than five grand. Every cheap and/or old used car needs something, whether the seller is aware of it or not. Having said that, it never hurts to get a second opinion. What were the symptoms that led you to bring it to the mechanic in the first place?

That gives you options. If it runs ok then repairing the catalytic converter can be optional. If it’s clogged and causes issues with the car running/accelerating, you could also do a generic or aftermarket cat and those are usually cheaper. The only drawback is sometimes you still get a p0420 trouble code (check engine light) with aftermarket cats.

If you don’t have emissions you could “gut” the catalytic converter. Which is just take the converter off and knocking everything inside of it out. A bad/clogged converter will also come with a bad smell supposedly like rotten eggs.

OP go to a junk yard, or buy a new one. This car will last you 300k+ miles
