1985 BMW 318I Electrical Issue (SOLVED)

So I'm trying to diagnose why my E30 is not showing any signs of life when I try to turn over the key, I noticed that the car's idle was jumping between 1-3K RPM's and that my dash lights were weak when the car was running yesterday (with a jumpstart).

My battery is basically new so I'm thinking it's either the alternator (it was constantly squeaking when i drove it from the shop) or the starter is acting up?

All jokes aside you need to have a charging system checked. Could be a failing alternator for sure

I'll check the charging system but i know the belt on the alternator is so loose that it will need to be replaced anyways.

Maybe it is not rotating the alternator enough? Could be slipping

I would adjust it first and see what happens. Do you have access to a digital multi meter?

Alright I'll go ahead and tighten up this belt first, I have access to a parts store so I'll run out and buy a multimeter to check afterwards.

Can you get the car to a parts store? They can test the alternator and battery for you

Unfortunately no, I'll have to remove the airbox and get access to the adjustable nut so i can tighen it but not too tight to where the teeth will strip.

I'm going to test for a parasitic draw since I'm suspected to believe one of my fuses is causing the issue, will be replacing the alternator and the belt as well.

A fuse wouldn’t cause parasitic draw

A fuse is placed inline and is there for over current. If you have parasitic draw, something is not shutting off

ISSUE RESOLVED: BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO AGE. CLEANED CONTACTS AND RUNS GOOD 👍🏻
