If your budget is 7k and you want a car to last a while, your budget is actually 5k and the remaining 2k will go into catching up on deferred maintenance. Mechanical simplicity is what you want, fewer components means, usually, fewer points of failure; and less maintenance required (which also reduces the impact of the inevitable skipped maintenance).

I genuinely don’t know what the German market is like, but my experiences with VW Golf have been very positive.

This can be a bit misleading, as a lot of folks focus just on km count; but a well maintained high km car can be just fine. If a car has service records or a documented service history, that is a plus. And I understand TUV is a pretty thorough check so you ideally want one that’s recently passed TUV - ask to see the records and see if anything was advised.

Yes if they have serviced records and are mechanically sound. I’m not advising you to get a high km car, but I am suggesting that high km can be fine if they have been properly serviced.
