Hey guys, clutch wore out on my car so I'm replacing it. No clue if my flywheel also needs to be replaced too, but I need to fix it fast so no time to drop the transmission then order parts I gotta get them ordered pretty much today.

Anyways I found a clutch kit (clutch disc, pressure plate, bearing) on rock auto for $170. Not sure if I should get a flywheel or where I would get it from since rock auto is out of stock.

I should note that I've always disliked the clutch on this car, it seems to have a delay. I have to hold clutch just a fraction of a second longer than I want before I can shift. Buddy told me a lightweight flywheel would fix that so maybe I should do that now while I'm unsure if the stock flywheel is busted or not? Should I also take this moment to 'upgrade' the clutch disc and pressure plate as well? I'm not made of money but I can spend a little bit I just don't know what I'm doing tbh.

Hoping to get some opinions and knowledge here

not exactly sure, but i think it was at high rpm shifting but then that might have been the clkutch slipping before it totally wore out i dunno

#

i know when i first got it 25k miles ago i noticed i couldnt shift as fast as even my ford focus, andfigured i just wasnt used to the car, but later realized its just always slow to clutch and i have to give it a moment with the cliutch pressed before i shift

im not a car person but my first thought was that there must be some way to tune the clutch to be 'stronger'. it was just feeeling like pressing the clutch pedal all the way was only doing 90% and i wished there was a way i could make the clutch more effective

There’s a bit of a rev hang that can be tuned out, but IMHO this car responds well to a lightweight flywheel. If it were me, I’d do an OEM clutch and lightweight flywheel. Future you can tune it if the rev hang is still a concern, but doing the flywheel “while you’re in there” is the move to make today.

makes sense

Also, needs a clutch in four years? Yikes.

rough pagoda
#

yeah big yikes. main reason im afraid to get oem clutch since im not a beginner to manual and its only got 32k miles on it and the clutch is gone?

#

the brake pads and rotors also wore to completion in that time

Yeah that’s wild. PO use it as a track car?

nope just daily driver, 2 road trips

I personally lean OEM for driveability, as most performance clutches tend to feel “heavy” or have weird engagement points to me. It’s worth having a chat with the manufacturer of the performance clutches (and flywheel for that matter) you’re looking at, so you can understand what behavior you should expect as compared to OEM.

"With this clutch kit a significant increase in clamping force is obtained, while still retaining OEM driving characteristics. The clutch features a slight increase in pedal pressure, smooth/linear engagement, and an extended wear life."

There you go. Can you find any reviews too, from folks with similar car?

rough pagoda

havent seen any specifically for the brz but random people on reddit seem to like the clutch manufacturer

Action Clutch

"Just installed a stage one which gave the pedal way more feel over the stock but not enough to tire your leg out while daily driving."

That sounds like a good review 👍

that clutch is $200 more than oem more than double, and i think thebiggest thing id get out of it is clutch life because i dont want to spend $170 and trop my transmission just to get another 30k miles. is it reasonable to assume that the stage 1 kit will last much longer given its statement and positive opinion of the company?

#

not sure if clutches are the sort of thing that can just simply be more durable and last longer

fathom heart
#

Especially if you’re making OEM power and not significantly increasing your power, yes; I’d expect an upgraded clutch to last longer than OEM

well good to hear

#

im ordering these from MAPerformance, unless theres a poppular cheaper option i should know of?

I’ve heard of them, and they seem to have a good reputation; so that’s probably your way to go.

#

But give it a bit in case one of our other regulars chimes in with another suggested vendor. I usually do OEM stuff so I’m not super familiar with the aftermarket parts vendors

I'm thinking it will take me two days to do the work since ive never done it before is that about right?

No

Disclaimer - I work slowly. Usually I leave a week for a clutch job, but I’m working on jackstands and full time so the car project is after hours. Be prepared to hit a major snag with a seemingly simple step, a lot of times it’s dropping the exhaust which is usually step 1. Make sure you have a proper transmission jack, I’ve used a Harbor Freight one for years. Make sure to understand any specialty tools you may need in advance - long extension possibly for bell housing bolts? That type of thing.
