I just recently brought my mustang in for a heater hose, waterpump, and timing chain replacement into a shop after failing to do it myself. My car was running perfectly fine beforehand without any codes but the tensioner was loose.

I brought it in and they fixed everything. I got it back and it threw 2 codes and didn’t run right. A code for low egr flow rate and bank A was running lean. I brought it back and they said they cleaned everything up and it fixed it.
I got it back and it was running alright except it had a rough idle in drive and park. 6-8 miles it threw a misfire code but it wasn’t a very specific code. They told me it had to do with the camshaft sensor which I never touched other than to unplug it when I was trying to do it myself.

Now they’re telling me they need a special tool to see if thats the issue and they’re going to have me pay more since they can’t prove it was an issue before I brought it in due to it being undrivable at the moment I brought it in (Water pump, radiator fan, alternator, and radiator hoses removed).
What do I do? I only have $450 left and it’s all I have to drive. I have classes for college and I’m already on the brink of failure due to my absences. The car sat for 3-4 weeks before It was drivable again.
Is this on me or the shop?

I believe the code is P1309

At this point, second opinion time. Unfortunately you may have to pay them for their diagnostic time, but a shop asking for you to pay for their special tool is silly. A shop with proper equipment will be a lot more inclined to help.

The owner had the tool and I didn’t have to pay.
Guy’s amazing and it turned out to be a bad cam sensor. Seems it just happened by coincidence

It also wasn’t a fortune to replace which was nice. They were gonna have me just pay for the part but I willingly paid the installation costs because it was most likely just because of old age and not because of anything they did (hopefully)

Thank you for your input
