Hi evereyone.

I have a Toyota Vitz 2011, in some parts it is also called Yaris.

It has a 1KR-FE 990 CC 3 cylindr engine.

I just have this general curiosity about a sound it makes. I hear three clicks over approximately 1 second when I turn the engine off.

This mostly happens when the engine is warm. What could it be??

I know its not the sound of the catalytic converter cooling down, because I know when my car makes that sound its metallic clinking noise that keep going on for a minute.

This is very clearly three clicks - sounds more like clucks - as the engine is revs down.. The sequence looks like this.

  • I finish parking my car.. I'm in 'R'
  • Then I switch to 'P'.. engine still running
  • Then I turn the key to ignition off.
  • The engine hums down to a stop over one second.
  • Then I hear a cluck cluck cluck

Thorough analysis, good job.

Do you have an oil light on? Have you tried to replicate the sound starting the car cold and turning it off cold?

#

Not to scare you, but it sounds like a rod or crank bearing..

If you hear it after you stopped the engine, it could just be relays

See if you can listen to the sound once the car is shut off. Like lay down underneath and have some one shut it off for you.

If you hear a clunk clunk sound near the bottom of the block, you may have bearing issues with the crank. That’s why I was asking if you had an oil pressure light on. This would affect your oil pressure light.

So the thing is, I listen with the bonet open, and I can clearly hear the engine dying down revving to a halt. then I hear click click click click.
Like I'm almost certain that its something electrical and mechanical but not a relay. But I don't think a relay would exist among the parts around the engine block.

I hear it near the fuel rail, like just behind the engine top. Does an EGR make such a sound??

EGRs have valves so yeah it would make a sound

Hi everyone. So this is strange. I was having some misfiring issues with my car, I found sometime and got under the hood, one of the wires for the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor was loose, I tightened it up and the misfiring is gone, the engine is smooth.

But most intriguingly the click click click click sound on engine shutdown is gone.... What is happening?? :p
