#Leak from 4L60E Bellhousing

2005 GMC Envoy with the 4.2 Vortec, RWD.

I’ve been having a very slow leak from this area for a while now, but have been keeping an eye on my oil and transmission fluid levels. About a week or two ago, I noticed that my transmission fluid seemed to be lower than usual. Still no puddles or stains underneath the car as always, leak only seems to happen while on the road, but it’s clearly gotten worse now. Two days ago, turned on the car, I could physically feel the car shifting when I put it in drive and other gears. No weird sounds but I took it as a sign that I’m now low on fluid. Very limited information out there about this leak location on this transmission, mostly you’ll find stuff about leaks from the pan instead. I did find one video about a seal that is likely the culprit. I also am posting this just in case if I am misunderstanding this, someone told me that this is an engine oil leak but I don’t see the source of the fluid coming out from anywhere else, just this area in the bell housing. Am I missing something here? Tried to smell the fluid but it kinda smells like both oil and trans fluid so I’m not sure how to proceed for now.

That leak is really far forward

#

I think it's oil

After further research, I am going to buy a new rear main seal, and a new torque converter seal. I’ll remove the transmission and just replace whichever is leaking

#

Or both if need be, lol

Yeah was gonna suggest the rear main but this is a 4L60, how many miles on it? Might be best to get a soft rebuild done if your going to pull it

#

These are known to fail.

Clutch packs go boom

Just passed 220k miles the other day

Shops work on these transmissions often, or at least they used to, so they will know what they are looking for. People all over YouTube rebuilding this trans.

I’ll consider it, and see what’s in the pan. So far have not had any issues until two days ago when I started to feel the car lurch a bit while I was moving the shifter. No odd sounds. I assumed that perhaps my fluid was low but maybe there is more to it.

It’s a good idea just to have it looked at, even if it is you looking at the pan.

As much as I really wanted to use this as a hands-on opportunity, I think I may go with what you have suggested

Though there is one thing I am still curious about, before this I started looking for reputable replacements for the rear main seal. Couldn’t really find any that specifically fits on the engine for my Envoy. But that kinda doesn’t make any sense because isn’t the 4.2L design the same in all of the trailblazer clones?

#

And yeah, I did try to find the part number as well, didn’t yet

Go get some rayspestos stage 1 clutches

Corvette servo

#

Rear main is a tapered seal iirc

#

Maybe get a shift kit

I thought long about it and I’m going to proceed to resolving this myself. Not that I have anything against mechanics, but I have been trying to learn how to fix things on my own and I promised myself last time to give it a swing the next time around something goes wrong.

Now if I see something really wrong inside then I’ll likely take different action but there hasn’t been really any abnormal behavior besides the leaking and lowering transmission fluid levels, and the very noticeable shifting as a result of that.

I’m going to buy the seals I need, and I think I’ll also go with a clutch pack as well to prevent the 3rd and 4th slipping issue, considering how old this transmission is.

#

I appreciate the further insight and advice, and I do recognize that everything I’m doing is at my own risk and of my own fault if anything goes wrong.
