Like BSSB said, keep your Miata stock and give it few months like 3 minimum to get your knowledge on knowing your myat, don’t mod it crazy until you really know your car because the body kit permanent so pick your poison

seeing how it's been a rental I say you should get a full inspection of the car and address any issues, it'll probably have seen a lot of miles and a lot of drivers so if they don't do it before sale do all the fluids, new tires, new wiper blades, new brake pads possibly rotors if needed and if the rims have been curbed you could look at new rims as well.

as for mods leave it stock, get to know the car then do minor mods as you notice things that don't work and need improvement but keep them minor since it'll be your daily/first car and you wanna keep it running.

you could do a partial or even full exhaust system to get more/different noise but chose wisely cause some are gonna be far to loud or give some awful drone.

you could do a new intake and tune to let the engine breath a bit more freely.

cosmetically IMO the car doesn't really need anything, just take care of it and maybe throw some nice wheels on there and it'll be golden though the Mazda OEM splitters, side skirts and trunk lip can look quite nice while being fairly understated

This is a great first car, and 100% yes to what Devil mentioned. It will teach you about driving dynamics and is good to go right out of the box. Don’t mod it until after you can describe what characteristics you want changed, then focus your mod on how you achieve that goal.
