What can I do? Prices to repaint is about $500 by professional, $300 by myself with spray cans which I’d rather not do and to replace it is about $400+

Is there anything I can do? I’d rather not spend a crazy amount of money on this old minivan and was hoping for a range of $100-$200 to repair or replace the hood, please let me know if you know of any alternative, thank you.

#

Also, the entire hood is needs a repaint, it’s all off color

Sell it and get a new van or find a better hood off the same van in a junkyard

#

It’s not a car worth spending much money on tbh

#

Keep it in a garage if you can to slow down the rust too

I would love to sell it but it’s my dad’s because I’m not of age to sell it or own one technically, I was recently saving up for a new car and have about $850 but I thought why not make it a project just to repair the van, but that hood price plus everything else on the external and internal (nothing bad js sounds like shit) i think i might just keep saving up

#

maybe turn the van into a work van or sm

#

Will your dad repaint it

stoic swallow
#

lol nah we had an agreement that he’d pay to keep it running only and external shits for me

#

but also like

#

any noises are also on me as long as it runs

naive bramble
#

It’s a Toyota it’ll keep running l

#

Those noises will probably just go away eventually lol

If you rattle can it, it will last less than a year lol

#

$500 is a good value

#

1k products are the worst compared to 2k

#

That hood is a full sand to bare metal and new coating application

#

If you don’t have the money yet just wait, won’t corrode to dust that fast

#

lol fr, idk my dad said he is going to buy my brother a car so maybe he can just take the van when I am possibly able to get a new car, but for now, I’ll probably be keeping a lookout at junkyards or maybe seeing if I can get a cheaper deal at a repaint

Prices only go up too with all the shitty “save the earth” type tax and limitations on the chemicals; thus making paint products and refinish jobs more and more expensive

stoic swallow
#

Definitely, prob the worst time rn to work on a car with inflation and such now that I think of it

Grab a sander, looks like surface rust

unreal quest
#

He might also just damage the remaining e-coating making it worst. I would just wait till he gets the dough to get it refinished

1k won’t last

Rattlecan that shit in John deer green, won't ever fucking come off, it's bullshit

unreal quest
#

Also sanding will remove that coating, and no 1 k product will be able to replace that

#

Proper way is a paint stripper an 2k etch before going to a 2k surfacer

calm burrow
#

I did actually have a weird rattlecan that wouldn't come off and I question what they did

#

For some spray paint they actually put primer on it, then the paint, it stayed on for years that we know about, no clue who painted it

unreal quest
#

The only rattle can product that is like “good” for refinishing is plastic adhesion promoter for pp

unreal quest
#

Only rattle can I would use @calm burrow

calm burrow
#

Never sen that

unreal quest
#

Ya it’s quite nice, especially for small tight spots. Just put whatever you want in there and it sprays it. The replacement cans on top or only like 4 bucks too

# stoic swallow Where can I find rattle cans? When I google all I see is touch up and such

Don’t, unless u want a job that won’t last for long. Also the paint may look different because of how the way the flakes lay down with aerosol compared to a gun. Also 1k products have a very weak chemical adhesion as they cure from air drying and not a hardener. If you really wanna try though. U will need to strip off all the paint on the top of the hood. Spray a can of etch primer, let it flash. Then spray a surfacer primer. When the 2 primers have fully dried/cured; sand it without breaking though to give the paint something to stick to (usually u do another layer of primer called a sealer and then within the flash, lay down the paint, but idk with the rattle cans if it would matter). Spray the paint (u are probably gonna want a single stage paint as it already has the clear coat mixed into the paint). Also remember to go down the same product line.

#

Also this is the getto path, and I do not recommend this; but if you wanna try. Be my guest

#

I don’t guarantee it lasting long; but this way would make it last as long as it can

#

How would I do it the non ghetto way? Buy a paint gun and some acrylic paint?

unreal quest
#

Yes but refinishing equipment is extremely expensive to start out with. I would just get someone else to paint it.

#

U need a minimum of a 20cfm compressor

#

If you have that as a starting point I can recommend a cheap $180 gun with multiple tip and needle sizes
