#Why Did My Paint Come Out Like This?

Hello all! Bumper had some sun damage, decided I'd get out the spray cans and fix it. It got all blotchy like that ONLY after the coat of clearcoat. It looked fine before clearcoat. I'm gonna sand it down and reattempt tomorrow.

I sanded the original paint with sun damage, did primer, sanded, two thick coats of base silver metallic, then that last coat of ultragloss clear which made it do that. Does anyone have any advice?

Can’t speculate on why it only showed up after clear coat, but typically the technique for first color coat is to do a light “dusting” coat before you do the 2nd and 3rd coats of color in progressively increasing thickness.

Pure speculation here but did your color coats not dry sufficiently between passes?

Looks like it layered unevenly. Maybe was still too wet when the next coat was applied

we think we did clear too soon after base

i couldnt say myself, but the can should say how long to wait between coats. I think usually 20 min or so between medium coats. Maybe 10-15 for light coats

Im sure it varies by brand of paint though

#

ive only ever rallte canned black with a clear over it, so I had more room to error on the base, but the clear was a learning process for me

#

I laid too heavy a clear coat on the top layer once and it came out ashy and nasty

#

was rushing to get it done. Should have been patient cause I hated looking at the result of rushing

Tbh in the front facing pic it looks like some of the uneven paint beneath is showing through. Not horrible but just calling as I see. Other angles look really smooth from the pics.
More important is how it looks in person to you.

If there is time and you want as perfect a finish a rattle can will give, you'll need to sand down to where it's all even and then repaint. But I personally would live with it.

The paint hadn't cured fully before you put on the new coats to correct it, so the color is still settling.

It looks like a combination of uneven base as well as the clear mixing with the base before it fully cured

Things to do next time:

  • Instead of two thick base coats, start with a very thin ‘dust’ coat, let it flash as per the instructions on the can, and proceed with 2-4 thin coats. Always follow the flash instructions or it won’t turn out as well as it could.

  • Most base cans have instructions on when it is appropriate to add clear coat.
If those directions are present, follow them.

  • Ensure the ambient temperature is appropriate, and airflow adequate. It will flash and cure more evenly.
