I'm no legal expert at all so please take my advice w a grain of salt but...

I bought my neighbors car out his driveway as a project car. Never registered it in my name. Never signed the title or anything. Just paid him $200 cash and he handed shit over

When I needed to get rid of the car, I called the local scrapper who picked it up, took the title, and gave me $200 cash

So all that to say, if the seller didn't steal the car I think you're good

  1. He’s trying to flip a car on you. He bought that car from a “motivated seller” for dirt cheap, fixed it, detailed it, and now wants you to buy it for an increased price.

  2. Yes this is title jumping. Yes it’s illegal. No do not buy this car. If I were you I’d 100% report them to the cops. I’m fairly certain this isn’t his first time doing this.

#

The reason he is doing this is twofold:

  1. Avoid paying tax on the car when he bought it
  2. Avoid going over a 5 car sale limit per year. If you are not running a dealership you cannot transfer the title of more than 5 cars
#

It’s illegal

#

It’s highly illegal. This is quite literally a form of tax fraud

#

Even though it’s “just sales tax”

I wouldn't

#

I understand it's not a legal practice but I've bought vehicles like that before

#

It isn't worth ruining somebody financially over such a minor thing

me and a friend flip cars sometimes and we do this, not to avoid taxes, but to not make things suspiscious with why we are selling a car so soon after acquiring it

I’m really curious what notary agreed to “notarize” the title without both signatures. That’s shady AF

I don't even have to have titles notarized here

#

Yeah I’ve only lived in one state that required title transfers to be notarized. It was annoying haha.

The only notarized document I needed was when I registered the audi

#

They needed to confirm it wasn't involved in a natural disaster for some reason

Mmhm

I mean, I’ve bought flip cars. Doesn’t bother me. But I would walk if someone tried to sell me something with the previous owners name on the title.
