Hah. Never seen that before. What kind of charger and what is the age of the battery?

@copper nacelle just a standard battery charger not sure. Battery is a few years old but it’s good

My alternator is broke tho so maybe that has something to do with it

Is there an amperage rating on your charger? Look for something like 1.5A or 20A.

3a-8a it says

It was working fine last night now it’s not

Ok that should be reasonable - I was worried it was like a 50 amp one and was overcharging your system. What’s the car doing/not doing that makes you suspect your alternator is not working and, similarly, the battery charger working fine last night but now it’s not? And is this a late 90’s Taurus/Sable? What are the conditions of the battery cables, especially the ground from the negative terminal of the battery and the other end where it goes to either the engine or the chassis?

take the battery out of the car and charge it @reef lava

you are witnessing the reason why you’re charging that battery up.

power is going through the ECM and to the alternator (which it shouldn’t be doing) and it’s causing your lights and internal components that run off the alternator to sap all the power off the charger and flicker like that.

@fathom steppe is it doing that because my alternator has failed? Was reading 12 v when I tested it

#

@copper nacelle alternator was weak giving off 12 volts

And it’s a Jaguar x type 2006

# reef lava And it’s a Jaguar x type 2006

x types have all sorts of electrical issues from this model year. just because it’s cool and cheap doesn’t always mean it’s a good car. as things get old they wear down and start suckin

What seems like most correct here is to take the battery out per @fathom steppe recommendation and charge it without it being connected to the car. Fix the alternator. Then you’re probably ok, but there’s still a possibility that you have a cabling issue and it is no guarantee the battery is good. May want to get it load tested while you have it out.

Hah. Kinda like the number one question in retail is “where is the bathroom”
