Hey all. My miata has an oil leak, and sounds like it's low on oil, BUT the dipstick shows that it's overfilled. It has mobil 1 full synthetic 0W40 in it right now, along with a mobil 1 oil filter. Should I just top it off and take it to the nearest mechanic shop? (10ish miles away)
Here's the oil level when cold before starting

Yes the lifter tick is horrible
And no, it didn't start ticking right after the oil change, it actually ran the best I've heard it run for a little while.
But now it's ticking like hell
@winter solar it's possible that the overfill is causing the ticking
Okay. Should i drain some oil and see if it gets better?
I could also just do another oil change with the exact oil you're supposed to use (5w30 not technically 0w40)
Why in the world did you use 0w40
Not really a big deal imo. A lot of 5w30 users have started using 0w30 ever since costco replaced their 5w30 oil with 0w30
And probably using 40 oil for the track?
yes
definitely drain it, your dipstick is almost never wrong
Honestly I'm not too sure. Perhaps someone with more oil epxeirence can shine light here. Is there a reason you're using 0w40 instead of 5w30? Do you track the car?
What I would do is take your valve cover off and see if your getting oil to the top of the motor.
If your pan is full when your running it, then it’s a possibility that your oil pump is going or has gone
would that give an engine code for low pressure?
Honestly I am not sure.
Never really dealt with this issue. Just some steps I would check if it were me.
I don't track the car. I used it because it was recommended on a couple of forums to fix lifter tick, and it did for a little while.
I replaced the valve cover gasket and there was plenty of oil on the top end.
I'll check it when running and send a picture of the dipstick.
It looks the same
Photo doesn't wanna send
I probably screwed up the pump didn't i
Anyone mind giving me a link to a decent one?
Based on the sound of your engine
I think it’s time to start taking the motor apart. Unfortunately, You might have damaged the motor.
The oil pressure gauge also reads almost zero-it is the dummy gauge mazda put in the 95 tho
Wonderful
Damn. Sorry fam
Well.
Time for LS swap😂
Lmao
Alright, how much is the repair gonna cost and how much could i get for the car if i sell it?
And should i just try an oil change to see what happens along with seafoam or smth?
I know it's a shot in the dark but i might as well try
You can sell it for a tiny bit more than scrap
Just use it as a fun project!
Or cummins swap it 😆
Yay
A project it shall be
Thanks y'all, time to go rethink my life decisions
same bro
Best case you just get yourself a new oil pump and the problem goes away
Yeah take the valve cover off and look. Will give you a good idea what your dealing with
RockAuto ships auto parts and body parts from over 300 manufacturers to customers' doors worldwide, all at warehouse prices. Easy to use parts catalog.
How hard are they to install?
Anton and gonzo y'all have both been insanely helpful-just wanted to say thx to both of you
No idea lol
How hard is it to do an oil pump?
I'm not paying someone else to do it so yeah, I'd like to know
Also small update i did change the oil+oil filter and now it runs fine
Guess i screwed up the last oil change somehow
I would still like to know how hard it is to change the oil pump tho
Yeah that is weird. Maybe there was a blockage and you cleared it? What weight do you run again?
And a pump isnt hard just takes time. Since this is RWD you may have to pull the radiator and all that jazz out. I
I ran ow40 last oil change, never again. 5w30 is in it right now.
Pennzoil full synthetic platinum
I can guarantee there is a step by step in this manual. Its also good to have. My Honda manual told me step by step how to do it.
You will just need to make sure you have the essentials. RTV, new front main seal, oil pan gasket, oil, etc etc
For parts not the haynes manual
Yeah probably so.
If your going to pull your radiator, maybe do a coolant flush.
Just depends on how indepth you want to go with it.
What's the oil pressure gauge showing? @winter solar
Fml
I love how this started as lifter tick and now it's morphed into an actual job
That's how cars are though-gotta love em
Stalled how? Just idling?
It bogs down to 250rpm after letting off the throttle when coming to a stop, then stalls.
Yes it's an automatic
Yes, and i have no idea
fuck you mazda for putting in a dummy oil gauge
It just shows if you have at least a bit of pressure
Damn. Sounds like your engine then.
Maybe get a mechanic oil pressure gauge and dummy hook it up to see where your at
If you have an oil pressure warning light on, or your oil pressure gauge reads low, it may be time to check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. You need to determine if it's a problem with the sending unit or if you really do have low oil pressure. This video will walk you through the steps of how to check oil pressure on your engine. It m...
Alright thanks man
One last question for both of y'all @sand kelp @urban rampart
Could the weird oil pressure be caused by a faulty oil pressure sensor?
It's possible the sensor is bad. Doesn't hurt to replace first before buying more expensive components.
Btw did you take the valve cover off?
To check if there's oil going up in that area.
I just took a peek in the oil cap (which screws directly into the valve cover and lets you take a nice look at the oil level yourself) and it certainly looks like it's getting oil up there
I'll probably replace the sensor then
