Here attached is a video with the sound that’s happening (please excuse the wind it’s a windy day today.) Mileage is 103k on the chassis and transmission, but engine was swapped for the same VQ37VHR motor with 52k miles. The sound was before and after the new motor. The sound has only gotten louder over time and has reached its peak. It’s very obnoxious. It has been like this since last September and it hasn’t affected the driving capabilities of the car. I just want to know what’s maybe causing the sound and how I can fix it.

it’s even while driving ? i’m not sure if it’s a pulley cus remember i did an engine swap and it has the same sound
Did u swap ur ac, ps and alternator?
It is either a pulley or ur engine
As it is rhythmic
what do you think is wrong with it?
cus when i open the hood and put my ear next to my engine i don’t hear it as loud as under the car
and i did not swap my alternator
Probably a pulley then
the guy just compressed my ac more
would there be a chance of an exhaust leak?
or a bad cat
No
No
hm is a pulley an easy fix or expensive ?
that is weird thi
cus the sound happened before with the old engine
and after with the new engine
like i got new engine and new pulleys and everything
Maybe they reused the exhaust gasket and it didn’t hold up after being put back on
exhaust gasket? what’s that
Check for that, but also check ur pulleys
Let me just send a video
okay lemme go start her up
i don’t hear it rn
cus the car is cold
so that’s another point to make
the sound isn’t noticiable while the car is cold
GG @spring patrol, you just advanced to level 3! Chat more to level up and earn top roles!
but doesn’t this only matter if you took apart the engine ?
cus it was never taken apart it was just our with the old and in with the new
plug in the wires and electrical system connect to tranny and that’s abt it
They will reuse the exhaust
you could see the belt moving
oh okay!s
so you think it’s an exhaust issue ?
yeah i hear it when i put my ears next to the wheels
but not when i am near the engine bay
Weird
Probably a exhaust leak on your down pipe
I would check it for a leak with soapy water
Do you have any lights on the dash? To check for a exhaust leak just spray soapy water on your exhaust and if it bubbles that means exhaust gases are escaping
U could fix it probably with just a new gasket
Also do u smell any like sulphur or rotten eggs
no not rlly
?
not much of a smell unless i like go 6k rpm
If it is leaking through a gasket
Np
i meant thag to the smell
i don’t smell anything unless i’m at high rpms
which is normal
no lights on the dash
So ya either a leak or a pulley. U are saying it ain’t really coming from the bay so I think it is your downpipe gasket gone bad
yeah maybe
would just getting the new catback exhaust fix it?
cus ik itll also give me like 12 hp or sum and a much better tone to the engine
I mean a gasket would fix it
how much is a gasket 😭
U don’t need a new exhaust
Bro like $5
ahhhh i see
would u have to take apart the exhaust to get to the gasket?
like in other words can me, a 16 yo kid do it or do i need help?
Ya, I mean first check if it is a bad gasket
Watch the video with Chris fix checking for leaks
And then see what gasket is bad
Also spray on your headers
It will give u maybe 2whp
Or less
Modern cars are pretty efficient to begin with, if u delete ur cat and do a full tune u will maybe make 5 more whp
yeah i guess but it’ll sound much cleaner
I'll warn you, exhaust manifold gaskets on VQs are NOT fun. Do NOT disconnect the cats from the manifold, just disconnect the cats from the Y pipe and the manifold from the block. Your manifold studs should be rust-free since Nissan did something decent with their lives, but the Y pipe bolts will be bad. It took me around 16-17 hours to do a Long Tube Header install on my 370z, because the bay is so ridiculously tight and hard to work around. Drivers side is worse than the passenger side, but both will suck. Watch a youtube video on how to install Long Tube Headers (I think TheCarizon on YT has a very good video on it), that will show you how to remove your manifold. In all honesty, I wouldn't do it myself unless I absolutely had to. it sucks. I haven't even watched your video yet, but lemme try
I mean I just told him to check for leaks first
My brother has a g37 and it ain’t that bad. Penetrating fluid, a ratchet and hammer will get u through the job with ease.
16-17 hours?!?!?
U should have seen my skyline’s exhaust. Seemed to have a coolant leak that dropped directly onto the down pipe bolts and part of the header. Had to drill 2 of them and use a retractor kit to get em out 💀
oh gawd. ya i’m gonna see if my mechanic wants to do it for me 💀
he does things for cheap so maybe 15 for labor and 5 for the part or whatever
Ngl it ain’t that bad. Especially depending on where the gasket leak is on the exhaust
ok so. news.
it’s the cats.
both of them.
i didn’t get an engine light so the cats are working but they just make the annoying sound
it hasn’t done anything to the performance of the car
i need opinions on what cats i should get… that is cheap but also would do it’s job and make the VQ sound nicer.

@spring patrol is it the cat gasket or the cat???
time to get highflow cats
@everyone will it pass inspection in texas ?
GG @spring patrol, you just advanced to level 4! Chat more to level up and earn top roles!
Yes
awesome
wait wait wait wait wait @granite wolf
i sent the wrong link
this one is the one
would this pass inspection? or throw up any engine codes ?
High flow cats are meant to function the same as normal cats but allow a better flow. It shouldn’t throw any codes and u should be able to pass inspection
I also got a g37 let me know how the high flow cats are I might buy them
I wouldn’t make a vq any louder unless u have too
I wanna tune it
How on a n/a v6. A vq, a newer engine that has great flow already. How is a high flow cat gonna do much?
Cat deletes are for turbo charged cars
For the pop and flame tune you wanna get rid of cats
I guess if you want that, it will sound pretty bad though.
Straight piped v6s sound really bad
U do u
I wanna be heard 14 blocks away
For me I wouldn’t want a car sounding like it is part of a school band
I don’t care about sound I just want it loud
Odd
My na rb will sound loud with itbs and a full hks setup. Still will have a high flow. Since I don’t want rasp and don’t want it too loud. Trust me u don’t want a shitty sounding car. Better to have a medium nice sounding car than a loud and completely shit sounding.
My brother’s g37 with a new rear exhaust already sounds like a trumpet; can’t imagine it with a cat delete. I would shun him.
?
U trying to send a video
Won’t let me post vid
Trust me I know how a vq sounds
Bro it’s the same engine layout
Yeah but different pattern changes noise
Not that much
They sound pretty similar, as the piston firing pattern is the same.
Plus I hit redline in the video and didn’t shift so good thing it won’t post 💀
Reason why a rb and vq sound so different. Have the same amount of pistons but have a different layout and firing order
Ya not my taste at all, too much rasp
The cat will not help with that
It will make it much worse, I would look into getting a resonator
Bro you friend has a engine light btw 😂
Bro it still keeps it loud just gets rid of that rasp
I need tires first lol my shit bald
I be drifting in the rain tho
I think I got something wrong my with sensors I feel like my car run outa gas to fast
would the highway flow cat give me some good sound ? if so what’s an example?
high*
also would i need to tune my car ? or it’s just put it in and ur good
@everyone
U will need a tune if u want to take from the benefits of a high flow
It will sound louder and more raspy like hydroids car
I don’t have muffler or resonator
That is what I am saying
Cats act quite similar to a muffler and when removed or replaced with high flow; your car will be louder and more raspy
So it will sound similar to your car hydroid
Maybe a bit more quite but still similar
Yeah def be quieter tho
I think ima get test pipes and then Throw on vibrant resonators
Then get flame tune
If you have a stock exhaust, and just throw on high flow cats, your exhaust will be high pitched and raspy, (see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prGhaBiIMkI). You do not HAVE to get tuned, however you will get a check engine light and no noticeable gains. If you have an aftermarket catback, you'll have to look it up yourself. In my entirely honest opinion, if you're going to buy Hihg flow cats, you'd be better off getting catless longtube headers. ISR has some for $700 that sound great. Test pipe install is arguably worse than long tubes, because of the "Demon Bolts" connecting the cats to the headers'
the thing is @inner drum i don’t got that typa money man. that’s why i’m going for some decent but cheaper option
soemtjing thag will do the job. stop the rattling and will make it sound better than stock
and abt the CEL on this specific one i was looking at all the reviews say it doesn’t pop the cel
and has oem 02 sensor spots or whatever
high flow cats cost the same as ISR long tube headers. You might be thinking of test pipes, which are just cat deletes, but yeah, high flow cats aren't cheap
what abt these ?
or
which one do you guys think is better ?
My entire exhaust is ISR (Long Tube Headers, Y pipe, Y Back) so I'm a bit biased towards them, I'd go with them. High quality for the price you pay
What’s the difference between long tube headers and test pipes I was going to get some test pipes to shoot flames
