Panels can be replaced and reshaped all day, the issue is when the force of the accident bends or fractures the frame, and to what degree.

Most things are repairable, the issue is just convincing your insurance that its worth it.

i feel like insurance would total it instantly just because it's old, i'm planning on paying for it myself at this point

Body shops are charging a-lot in priceing, compared to not to long ago. I think 2k for the fender and 3k for the door panel alone.
